Vanguard Raniere’s “blow off taxes” advice taken to heart?

The NY Post reported back in 2011 that Keith Raniere, aka “The Vanguard,” who was arrested last week in Mexico and faces federal charges of sex trafficking and forced labor, allegedly advised his followers to go “off the grid.” As reported in the Post article, NXIVM and Raniere victim, Barbara Bouchey, testified that “Raniere ‘felt the government was watching him [and] he needed to be careful” so he took “precautions to not have his name on things, not have a driver’s license.’ Raniere encouraged ‘a number of people [to] get off the grid, meaning not have a tax ID number, not to file their tax returns.’”

A public search of many of the Vanguard’s followers suggests that advice was taken to heart.

A search of online records for the Saratoga County Clerk’s office shows a number of longtime members of NXIVM, living in Clifton Park, have judgments for unpaid federal and state taxes.

Some of the liens and judgments were paid off, some remain unpaid.

Before starting NXIVM, Mr. Raniere ran a multilevel marketing firm that was investigated in several states.

The National Association of Attorneys General Consumer Protection Report, February 1993

Section: Financial and Investment Fraud; Pg. 20:

Attorney General Winston Bryant recently announced that his office has entered into a consent decree with Consumers’ Buyline Inc., [(Keith Raniere founder and President)], to settle charges that it operated an illegal pyramid under state law.
Under the settlement, the company agreed to pay $245,000 in attorneys’ fees and to offer refunds to consumers. According to the Attorney General, the company misrepresented the value of its services to prospective participants.
The company agreed, however, to alter its structure to prevent the possibility of consumers paying for the chance to recruit others into the alleged scheme.

In 1993, New York AG Robert Abrams ordered the firm, Consumers Buyline, shut down, calling it an “illegal pyramid scheme.”

It closed and Mr. Raniere went on to found Executive Success Programs, which is a life coaching company that teaches students the skills of success.

The “Allison Mack” document is incorrect. The name isn’t hers, if you actually read the document.

A search of public records will show the notice was issued to a similarly-named woman who once lived in Clifton Park, but moved away quite some time ago. That woman shouldn’t be having her records uploaded this way, or have the implication out there that she’s mixed up with illegal activity on the level you’re suggesting – it’s wildly irresponsible to be “exposing” someone who has absolutely nothing to do with any of this. Please remove it.

ETHICAL (NXIVM Dictionary): Not paying taxes. Interfering in peoples’ bankruptcies for no good reason. Paying foreign law enforcement to arrest non-citizens. Collecting and holding personal materials for blackmail purposes. Hypnotizing and brainwashing people to bend them to your will. Living a life of luxury and pretending to live a monk-like existence, while denying adoring followers basic sustenance and comfort. Paying followers the minimum amount possible or taking their labor in trade for “debt,” Overcharging an unsuspecting public for bullshit courses. Operating an MLM scheme after being ordered not to…oh my, this post is getting too long – better cut it short.

1. Several of them appear to share address. Some are well known/expected (Pam/Karen/Keith), but Dawn Morrison and Kathy Russell seems to share an official address too. Wonder if they co-inhabit, or just play musical houses with NX-owned properties..

2. There also seems to be a “pattern” in the house #s of their properties:

“3’s”: Hale, Flintlock, Oregon Trail, Laurel Oaks
“7’s”: Generals Way, Taymor Trail, Oregon Trail. Also 115 Grenadier (1+1+5), and 214 Victory Way (2+1+4)
“21’s”: Oregon Trail, Lape Road

Could just be a coincidence, and there are plenty others that don’t fit the pattern…but for about half of the known NX homes to have the same #s seems oddly intentional.

Any thoughts??

I don’t think there is any particular significance to the numbers. NXIVM encourages people to live together in group homes. This strengthens the Cult’s bonds. And also serves to reinforce the notion of outsiders as ‘Parasites’.

What would be interesting is tracking down ownership through property tax records and the shell companies that own the houses. And guess what, since the houses were used to further a criminal enterprise and/or bought with proceeds from a criminal enterprise, they are subject to asset seizure and forfeiture.

Basically, give it a year. The U.S. Marshals Service and IRS are going to have a big real estate sale in Clifton Park and Albany!

Wow. Mind-blowing. I know that the UK is a Nanny-state, built on debtors gaols etc. but, here, you miss a council tax payment for one quarter and you will pay up or be arrested. How the hell have they got away with this for so long? Lauren Salzman and Karen Unterreiner, Barbara Jeske owe how much? with no IRS repercussions? I never thought of the US as this sort of a tax haven.

He oftened told his “followers”.(those that believe in him and followed his advice), that they could live in a home for months with an unpaid mortgage and stop paying your credit card bills. Of course, his closest followers always supported and told others to not pay their taxes. It was a way of getting collateral on his followers.

NXIVM also never gave anyone outside the state of NY (and who knows how many inside the state of NY) 1099’s regardless how many times people asked for them. A smart person kept good records of their commissions in order to pay their taxes.

NXIVM got 100% of all course work paid to them directly and paid commissions the following month. Investors only need to look at any course application filed in any of NXIVM’s cases to see that is true. It states who to make payment to and where to send the funds.

That is some great research

Thank you!!! And what exciting news. Tax evasion brought down Capone’s empire. And it clearly could be used for the same purpose with Keith Raniere.

About the Author

Frank Parlato is an investigative journalist.

His work has been cited in hundreds of news outlets, like The New York Times, The Daily Mail, VICE News, CBS News, Fox News, New York Post, New York Daily News, Oxygen, Rolling Stone, People Magazine, The Sun, The Times of London, CBS Inside Edition, among many others in all five continents.

His work to expose and take down NXIVM is featured in books like “Captive” by Catherine Oxenberg, “Scarred” by Sarah Edmonson, “The Program” by Toni Natalie, and “NXIVM. La Secta Que Sedujo al Poder en México” by Juan Alberto Vasquez.

Parlato has been prominently featured on HBO’s docuseries “The Vow” and was the lead investigator and coordinating producer for Investigation Discovery’s “The Lost Women of NXIVM.” Parlato was also credited in the Starz docuseries "Seduced" for saving 'slave' women from being branded and escaping the sex-slave cult known as DOS.

Additionally, Parlato’s coverage of the group OneTaste, starting in 2018, helped spark an FBI investigation, which led to indictments of two of its leaders in 2023.

Parlato appeared on the Nancy Grace Show, Beyond the Headlines with Gretchen Carlson, Dr. Oz, American Greed, Dateline NBC, and NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, where Parlato conducted the first-ever interview with Keith Raniere after his arrest. This was ironic, as many credit Parlato as one of the primary architects of his arrest and the cratering of the cult he founded.

Parlato is a consulting producer and appears in TNT's The Heiress and the Sex Cult, which premiered on May 22, 2022. Most recently, he consulted and appeared on Tubi's "Branded and Brainwashed: Inside NXIVM," which aired January, 2023.
