Susan Dones Tells Shocking Story About Nancy Salzman Trying to Get Collateral

Susan Dones did an interview recently with podcaster, Roberta Glass, where she reveals some interesting NXIVM back story:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWKFImlAFy8

It is a hugely informative interview for those interested in a lot of never-before-heard stories about Nxivm in its first 10 years – and what they did to Susan after she left.  Glass is certainly a thoughtful interviewer who knows how to let her guests tell their story in their own fashion.

One thing about Susan is she is very candid. One of the things Susan tells Roberta is that Nancy Salzman once felt her up while she was driving with her in a car. She suspected it was not Nancy’s idea but an assignment from Keith.

Susan is a lesbian and Nancy seems to be a heterosexual woman.

Susan told Frank Report that it did not end there.  Nancy wanted Susan to send her a letter where she explicitly says she had a desire to be with Nancy in a romantic or sexual way.  This was pre-2009.

Susan was in a committed relationship with her spouse, Kim Woolhouse, which Nancy certainly knew.

Susan told Nancy she did not want to send an inauthentic letter professing a desire for Nancy which she did not feel. But Nancy insisted, explaining that this was some kind of test of trust or vulnerability or some such higher value Nxivm teaching.

Since Nancy was her superior in the business where Susan was earning her living – Susan ran the Tacoma Nxivm center – she went along, assuming there was some sort of teaching behind this that was meant to help her understand something she did not presently comprehend.

Susan sent the letter and Nancy, of course, held onto it.

Later, when Susan left Nxivm with the Nxivm-9 and filed for bankruptcy, along with her spouse Kim, Nxivm sought to intervene and try to prevent the bankruptcy from being discharged.  The amount of money in dispute was probably far less than the amount of money Nxivm/Bronfman would spend on lawyers to stop the bankruptcy.

The story is rather well known of how Susan went up against a battery of Nxivm attorneys, representing herself pro se, and how she won hers and Kim’s cases.

Nancy Salzman

During the proceedings, the Nxivm attorneys introduced into evidence the letter Susan wrote to Nancy about her attraction to her.

Perhaps they had hoped that this might show that Susan was disgruntled with Nxivm because Nancy did not return her amorous desires. Perhaps they also thought that Kim did not know about the letter and this might cause a rift between the couple.

As far as Kim was concerned, it was ineffective. At the time Susan was being pushed by Nancy to write the letter, Susan told Kim about it and advised her that she had no such feelings towards Nancy and explained that it was supposed to be some kind of test.

In a sense, this was an early seed of collateral, years before DOS.

Now maybe there was poor communications between Nancy and the legal team that represented Nxivm in their quest to stop Susan and Kim from discharging their bankruptcies.  But to use this manipulated [one might almost say ‘coerced’] letter and introduce it as evidence, expecting it to be taken at literal, face-value is a dishonest way of litigating.

It so happened that it backfired on them. The bankruptcy judge, by slow, deliberate degrees, began to take a burn to Nxivm. By the time it was done, Bankruptcy Judge Brian D. Lynch said, “NXIVM’s claims and litigation tactics were disproportionate and largely lacking in merit, in dismissing nearly all claims against Dones.

In the Woolhouse case, Judge Lynch wrote: “Her ‘sin’ was to attempt to walk away after discovering that NXIVM was not what she thought or hoped. In return, she was labeled as ‘suppressive,’ a term that NXIVM applies to former associates who leave the company or whom NXIVM perceives to be its enemies, and subjected to protracted litigation from two large law firms and a phalanx of attorneys.”

  • Susan, you are one of the originals. A real hero. Happy new year.

The people here questioning your motives, they themselves have evil motives. Or they are just too stupid to understand what the modus operandi of a scam like Nxivm does to its members.

Let the haters dance like trained monkeys for their “heroic” leader.
I’ll bet that Keith, Nancy, Clare, etc. wished they had never come after you.
That they had left you, Barbara, Toni and all the others just be. No hard feelings, bye-bye.
Yet, instead, they tried to destroy you. They didn’t want to do right, set somethings straight, or be “joyful”. They wanted to destroy you. To rip you mentally, emotionally and financially apart. Like a pack of hyenas.
And still, you came out victorious.

The marks the fight undoubtedly has left, wear them with honor. They are not badges of shame. Their badges of honor, integrity and bravery.

    A warm greet from Holland🤘

    • Agree. Great post.

The blindly following stooges who went along with their leader, and mercilessly tried to ruin so many good, innocent people should be bathing in remorse.

Is guilt really such a useless emotion? Or was that thought planted by a madman who wanted to corrupt?

Feeling guilt and remorse is a sign that you’ve violated your own morals/ethics/standards. It is a call-to-action for you to change your behavior.

  • People are going to believe what they want, I don’t care.

It’s odd that I’m still with the same person since 1994 if I had this mad crush on Nancy for nine years, don’t you think? Who would put up with that?

Two or three times in my legal battle with NXIVM the letter to Nancy shows up.

I don’t remember if it shows up in my first deposition. I know it shows up in Kim’s deposition but she already knew about it. She knew about the assignment. She knew about it when I had to do it.

It also shows up at trial while I was on the witness stand and I’m made to look like the jilted lover. I was questioned about it under oath. My story has never changed about the letter

NXIVM’s story about the letter didn’t work with the Judge.

Did I at one time look up to and respect Nancy? Yes. Did I at one time love her as a dear friend? Yes. Was I in love with her, crushed out on her? No.

She betrayed me, she emotionally abused me and used me for her gain. Along with Keith, Clare, Lauren and others not arrested.

    • I believe you, Susan Dones. But, it is healthy that you don’t care! I have a sincere Nxivm query. If Nxians are always deriding emotions and obsessed with “data” and ” rational inquiry” how does that square with “he who has the most joy wins”? If emotion is something to be scorned, belittled and criticized, why then is a perceived emotional state the end goal? It has never made any sense to me. And I repeat it is curiosity alone that motivates my asking for clarity on it. Thank you.

    • Hi Susan, hope you & Kim are well. Just want to affirm you here in this matter.

These events are, yes, part of the public record and behind the scenes you were always completely consistent and appeared very genuine to me as it all unraveled.

When we were scrambling to help you find a pro bono attorney licensed there, this disgusting sexual blackmail aspect of your case was discussed with some of the legal rights groups we contacted…maybe they still have the records, too.

NX’s attorney — Robert Crockett of Latham & Watkins, who also repped Bronfman in the Precision Development matter — and his clients, of course — were completely out of line in the way they used your case to try to discredit you, overall. You knew too much. You had a murder admission on tape. You’re damn lucky to be alive. We all are!

We all knew and concluded that discrediting you and Kim with the blackmail they thought they had on you was the main reason they interceded in your bankruptcy. They had nothing to gain or obtain – it was all cold, calculated, premeditated character assassination.

That’s always been the main goal and purpose of NXIVM’s litigation tactics, IMO. Crockett used the Precision trial to smear Frank, in part, and Agnifilo did the same to Frank in Keith’s trial when Steve Herbitts was on the stand.

It’s what NX does, it’s what they want their attorneys, their PI’s, their hired hands, their hackers, their publicists, their trolls, their “clout” to do for them under whatever pretext possible.

It’s a pattern, a formula, a ‘science,’ an extortion ring. NX sets it up, up front, getting the ‘goods’ and when the time comes the big Bronfman bucks go to the suited sleaze balls who complete the ring with the release of the collateral in court —where slander is not punished but, far too often and depending, sometimes, on what NXIVM has on the judge — prevails.

Susan and Kim’s judge, btw, saw right through Crockett and NXIVM and issued a stunningly prophetic statement warning that he was disturbed by NXIVM’s treatment of Kim, to that effect.

But I still wish they’d responded to those reems of “special interrogatories” we propounded. Man, was that fun, thinking those loaded questions up for Keith and Kristin but maybe we went too far. Do tell, Keeffe, did Keith crap his diaper when he read some of those loaded questions? 😆. Why’d you weasel out on the response?

    • Respect to you, Susan, for standing firm; you know what you went thru with Raniere and Salzman and no ignorant detractor can take that from you. His usual methods of control wouldn’t work with you so he found another possible path, and your closeness with and trust in your partner shut that down. Just another example to extrapolate out to see the progression of his abusiveness – from there to DOS collateral. All the best to you and Kim.

    • The day Nan did what she did to Susan Dones, the day she received the collateral letter and started using it as she did, was the day Karma began moving in Dones’ defense. Does Nan have a life-partner? Has she ever since her life was turned over to the Nxivm grift? It isn’t difficult to understand why this particular Nxivm 101 collateral gambit was brought into play, it’s just great that it failed.

All the best, Susan and Kim, I wish you both a banquet of cold dishes served up with great good cheer, somewhere real sunny and warm.

  • I was in NXIVM and heard a very different version of this story. I had heard that Susan had “a huge crush on Nancy.”

If that were true, then it’s highly possible that Susan’s following comment is a lie: “Nancy wanted Susan to send her a letter where she explicitly says she had a desire to be with Nancy in a romantic or sexual way.”

In fact, what I had heard is that Susan had feelings for Nancy and was upset that the affection wasn’t reciprocated. If that were true, then it’s highly possible Susan wrote a letter to Nancy, got rejected, and then needed to come up with a story for how and why she wrote that letter.

The easiest way to do that is by saying “Someone made me do it.” Did anyone really press Susan for what she meant by “Nancy wanted Susan” to write the letter? What proof did she provide? If she didn’t provide proof, we may be just buying her lie, which is part of her attempt to save face.

All I’m saying is that we only have one side of the story, and based on what I experienced in NXIVM, Susan’s side alone is hard to believe, Frank.

    • But where did you hear that Susan had a crush on Nancy? From Nancy? From someone Nancy told? Was that the official story that they gave out on Susan?

The original source for “Susan had a crush on Nancy” almost certainly had to come from Nancy. So who to believe Susan or Nancy?

I have known Susan to be very careful with what she says. She is not unwilling to admit mistakes and own up to things she was wrong about. But for her to lie, to make up this story from whole cloth – I don’t think so.

On the other hand, I have known Nancy to lie, repeatedly. But that was just my personal experience. You may have a different experience with Nancy.

    • But you are also relying on hearsay. From Nancy directly or second or third hand. Why should anyone believe you? You aren’t even directly involved. You are further removed from the situation than the person you doubt. Not very “rational” in your complaint.

  • How do we know Susan is telling the truth? Isn’t it just hearsay at this point and gossip since Nancy can’t be here to confirm, deny or share her perspective?

    • Lol. Are we gonna read you spewing “hearsay” on every article moving forward?

Here’s a take from probably the only Nancy “supporter” on this site – I believe Susan. There is a pattern of NXIVM behavior and Susan’s story is in line with Keith’s playbook.

      • Their leader pretended to be a celibate monk for years. He’s lied through his teeth so many times, you have witnesses on the record telling their stories in news outlets, and numerous commenters with the same aliases posting here consistently relating their personal experience of the man with the forked tongue. Why would anyone believe anything these obvious NXIVM kool-aid drinkers call as hearsay?

      • —Here’s a take from probably the only Nancy “supporter”

So, you are a Nancy supporter. Are you also her former neighbor?

        • Nobody did anything without Keith leading the way. Nancy used to be a good person when I knew her. Keith caused Nancy’s ruin – like he caused the ruin of many others. If me not calling for the gallows makes me a supporter, so be it.

    • Have I missed something? Has Nancy died or had her mouth sewn up? Too many people have had bad experiences with Nancy. How can so many be lying? Cults, on the other hand, will have a story at the ready, aimed at discrediting, and a whole crowd ready to spew it on command.

  • Economic and “spiritual” co-dependency are incompatible as any kind of bedmates to allow into your life. This is not a healthy mixture. It never will be. Rather it is the mix of “conflicting” fields rife with potential deceptivities from con-men and con-women. These self-anointed fools and jackasses cannot help anyone. Maybe this is what happens when someone puts a false idol before the self, as though it were omniscient and could do your own inner spiritual workings for you, and you can try to stay feeling “safe” and complacent, about disenfranchising the self from the self. For crying out loud, what a mess. Ye gods and little fishes! See it or don’t.

Merely by using two “sexual harassment” examples out of many other possible ones, and not in a “spiritual” context, I have had a boss lock me in his office, his last attempt accumulatively, to give his sexual chase more room to pounce and to conquer (me), unseen. A doctor I went to once and only once, reached out suddenly and crushed my breasts with his two paws with a hideous expression upon his face. A month later I watched him walking Paia beach with his wife and two children. These incidents happen, but how and why would one allow them, take no action, right when such an incident occurs? Survival is survival. If you do not choose to confront such incursions, such invasiveness, at least allow yourself to have the common sense to walk away, bring down the curtain, finalize the experience, see it for what it is. Trust yourself. For once. If you do not use it, you are likely to lose it, this trust of the self. And yet this trust is the very source of what you REALLY have as strength, not only for yourself, but for others. You cannot give what you don’t have inside of yourself to offer.

What did Keith Raniere, Nancy Salzman, Clare and Sara Bronfman, Emiliano Salinas, Kristin Keeffe, etc. have to give? Big fat fucking nothing. That’s what. Maybe even worse than nothing. They have lived as takers, as fakers, not as any kind of givers. If that remains unobvious, what can one say? Holy shit? Will the way out get so much longer and more arduous than the “way in” was, or still is? The “way into” WHAT? The way out of what ?

Each of us is intact, unless handicapped somehow. We do have instinct, we do have intuition. These are not to be diminished or ignored, passed off as valueless. But the Nancys and the Keiths of this world will try and try again to deceive and to use others.

This is far from anything new, to be approached by harmfulness or to be aggressed against, sexually or otherwise. One would think that Nancy Salzman’s antics, feeling someone’s breasts uninvited and spewing her godawful psychobabble to justify her behavior, could have been the end of the matter for Susan Dones. But very unfortunately, it was not enough. For there was an actual co-dependency happening. And Susan Dones has worked against a lot of stacked decks ever since she decided to reject this pathway of tit-grabbing and egoistic madness designed as “a good thing.” The value sought has not been the value earned, through navigating and enduring such a long and dreadful series of experiences.

Now Susan Dones has the experience in her very being. She sees how used and abused , and the users and the abusers of others really look,, undressed and stripped out of their costumes. Like Arjuna of life and of legend, she had to fight for her own truth to prevail, even if she did not want to have to fight. She has fought and she has come out the other side. Transformed, I have no doubt. Her face alone speaks volumes. All of the very best to her and to her partner, Kim. Really peaceful warriors now and admirable for it. What’s done is done. But did it have to be this way? What is self-respect? Is it so immaterial? Life is such a teacher.

There is never any nourishment inside of a rotten can.

      • I believe you may have dropped a name far too close to Frank’s heart, Shivani.

Yeah, those double posts and such do make you appear a little “off your rocker” despite your eloquent writing flow and invaluable contributions to FR.

You are gold, diamonds, pearls, turquoise and Swiss chocolate cake with thick buttercream frosting.

And you are very much appreciated by many. I would not have known about “The Amazing Polly,” whose take on NXIVM is closer to the truth than anyone can guess, without your posts, Shivani.

  • This was scary to read. Thanks for sharing, Frank.

It was scary because DOS kinda felt like it was a new project that Keith was exploring because he was a sex addict.

This shows that DOS was actually NXIVM’s modus operandi for a long time.

      • Because Raniere was promising to knock her up for many of those years, as long as she didn’t run off with someone else. NiceGuy would f*ck Salzman in a New York minute.

      • Holy chihuahua, Shadow. There are too many hot stories happening right now to hit the red lettering. Here is one I have waiting, one viewable item you might appreciate, too. YouTube, Eric Hunley. “Scott Adams Says What About Hypnotism?” This is a discussion about Nxivm and has used a photo of “PeaOnyu” as its title illustration. This just aired in the last half-day. Hunley is newish to me but distinctly a good interviewer, pretty interesting subject matters, so far. Back to the Shadow.

  • Good on Susan and Roberta Glass! And, you, FR, for covering this angle, too.

Every time I hear the false NX defense claim that, “No collateral was ever released,” I wanna scream, “noooooo, not so — foul play!”

Fuck all, they’ve been blackmailing me and my ex husband from 1999 to this ducking day!

Susan & Kim’s bankruptcy case that I, along with Joe O’Hara and Toni Natalie did our utmost to help with, is just one example of Nancy and Keith’s sextortion ploys where the blackmail – whether real or fake – was used against a whistleblower or a potential one.

Nancy Salzman also sued Presidential hopeful Kirstin Gilibrand’s dad, Doug Rutnik, for alleged sexual harassment circa 2008 was it ?— we were bracing ourselves for Susan to be sued over that next, had she not had the presence of mind to inform Kim at the time the ‘collateral’ was obtained…

Little Keith’s “little bottles of poison” are still hanging over the heads of many an ex-NXIAN and their families.

Take Albany DA, P. David Sores, and his historic family ties to NXIVM…

    Dones is one sharp cookie.

    • I forgot about the little bottles of poison.

DOS was a culmination of his sick life and was brazenly rolled out because Vanguard thought he was protected by crooked cops/politicians. If he got away with DOS, he’d still be pushing the envelope. Lives would still be getting ruined and people would still be dying.

      • Language can be very revealing. Raniere started many years ago by threatening a young girl with metaphorical ” little bottles of poison”. Did he graduate to actually using literal little bottles of poison on women later? He had every common motive for poisoning at least two (substantial money; keeping them quiet; etc.) Who died under his “care”.

  • Sometimes it seems like Raniere was really just Madam Salzman’s long-term project, German shepherd show dog, battering ram. She was willing to compromise anyone, including two who came out of her womb, to achieve some form of grotesque overall status and dominance, as if people were merchandise or her personal “assets.” She used people’s vulnerability and even their idealism to bargain against them psychologically and to do harm, all the while maintaining an image as though she was actually qualified to be a leader and was acting as a generous and benevolent guide. She was very invested in being seen as superior, uncontestable, perfect, being the star, with Raniere as the supposed silver lining, the bait.

Raniere has been diabolical but he cannot even recognize the inner madnesses driving him. Nancy Salzman has been consciously and deliberately taking advantage of these dynamics for a generation. It’s sickening. Her utter hypocrisy and the harm which she has done to one person after another won’t be erased by an ankle monitor or by a prison sentence. And it has all been for her own false glorification and for profit. One wonders how honest Nancy Salzman has been or ever will be, with herself. She will have to be ready to examine and to shred her own character and motivations. Does she have the courage to be honest with herself?

Will Nancy Salzman be able to unearth the honesty that it is going to take her, to be able to tap into enough courage of the heart and of the mind…to really help herself? It is up to her. So far she has a rotten track record.

Salzman is at least in her mid-sixties and is in similar straits as a witch who has been kicked out of town. She has claimed to be against Raniere now and wants people to assume that Raniere deceived her for all of these years. Bullshit. Nancy was not even deceiving herself about his or her motivations. Her big illusion has been her NEED to be queen, regardless of the cost of her lording it over anyone whom she could fool.

The problem with this attempt to salvage or to revamp her image is that a whole lot of the rest of the human race were not born yesterday. Nancy Salzman is a type of foulness, the opposite of a loving mother or woman, but she is also a type of individual who has been behaving in a pattern of recognizable behavior, which has been seen and studied before, and in many, many instances. Nancy might not be able to see “her” pattern, her choices in life. She is going to learn, though. One way or another.

As a woman, as a mama and grandma, it is almost (for me) impossible to view Nancy Salzman’s actions with calm detachment. The precious trust, the sweetness and the hopes of people seem to have meant nothing to her. Rather than serving anyone, those whom Nancy PRETENDED to be serving or trying to “help,” now are still trying to recover. From her usury and from her abuse, many are still contending with a loss of balance, as well as with a severance of trust.

Really, it looks as though only a fool could trust Nancy Salzman now that she is, at least partially, exposed for who she really has been all along. The monster “wife” behind the Shogun of self-destruction.

    • I feel Nancy is actually a more evolved Psychopath than Keith. She might go scot-free or spend very little time in prison.

        • You probably know more than I. That is certainly something to keep in mind. Nevertheless, I see what I see as well and say so, write it. Frank allows for lots of perspectives as commentary.

          • Totally understand and get it. Just feel the need to speak up on a few things. I’m certainly not an expert, but saw some wacky stuff before I hightailed it out of there.

  • Frank, have you found any court records indicating why such a letter may have been introduced as evidence? Could there be other possibilities for introducing such a letter to the ones you propose?

    • I don’t know why the Nxivm attorneys introduced such a document. It would be interesting to know their argument.

      • Just ask Twiggy. The guy found control of a secret very useful, then used that same control on other people, to control their fridge, weight, health, bank balances, wealthfare and lives including those of minors.

…And that doesn’t even include the ‘internal’ damage done to those in the organisation who actually stood behind him that will continue to be felt by them on an ongoing basis by either a judge or fear.

      • No. I am basing it, as I said, on Susan’s story. However, I have never yet found her to be untruthful in the slightest way.

  • Nancy Sleazeman should be sharing a cell her VanFake. All that the latter was able to do business-wise was first and foremost enabled by this hypocrite, and anyone who had Nancy as an “ethical” mentor needs to get their mind consciously and subconsciously wiped/formatted from everything they were taught/programmed by her.

  • So this appears to be the first case of obtaining collateral and it was released with the intention to ruin a life. What a lovely, ethical group of people.

    • Possibly the first public release but definitely not the first use of it to manipulate. “Little bottles, little bottles…”

Blackmail was used many times to break-up marriages, recruit, and most despicably in my view, coerce slaves into both sex and criminal acts.

TEN-C or DOS was another means of tricking them into giving over the blackmail more willingly but for decades prior NXIVM obtained it illegally.

That key logger Clare Bronfman snuck on her pop’s computer? That probably accounts for a few of those gigabytes that fill 42 library floors worth of heavy dope.

  • Like many sociopaths (or currently unproven psychopath), Raniere seems to also be a control freak. An obsession with those that have significant others that goes back at least a decade. Why bother “testing” those that are already in committed relationships? Why not just go after the single ones or keep them isolated and single like most cults try to do? For some reason, he seems to like the challenge of secretly getting some form of proof of extra loyalty over those with significant others more than the single ones like India or Allison.

    • Not just a sociopath. KR displays all the symptoms of an NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder), a problem that is little-documented as most sufferers will never seek help (They’re always in the right and problems are always of somebody else’s making). As for ‘testing’ others relationships, etc., there is the added ‘joy’ at ‘covert destruction’ of others’ lives (I’m not making this up, it’s documented in KR patent application under Luciferianism.) So, targeting couples and destroying their relationships brings ‘triple joy’: 2 people and a relationship totally under his control.

Parlato has appeared on the Nancy Grace Show, Beyond the Headlines with Gretchen Carlson, Dr. Oz, American Greed, Dateline NBC and NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, where Parlato conducted the first-ever interview with Keith Raniere after his arrest, which was ironic since many credit Parlato as being one of the primary architects of his arrest and the cratering of the cult he founded.
