We have, perhaps, some tedious news for those sated with stories about Keith Alan Raniere: He has filed a Motion to Set Aside Conviction on the grounds of ineffective assistance of counsel.
To go free, he must show: (1) that counsel’s performance fell below an objective standard of reasonableness; and (2) that there is a reasonable probability that, but for counsel’s objectively unreasonable performance, the result of the proceeding would have been different.
His motion is more than 200 pages, nine times the maximum 25-page length for such motions. He is asking the judge to overlook that little inconsistency.
In his motion, Raniere relates how on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2018, the DOJ filed a sealed complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York (EDNY), accusing Raniere of Forced Labor and Sex Trafficking.
Raniere was in sunny Mexico, outside the jurisdiction of eager US authorities, who in turn collaborated with Mexican law enforcement to collar him, which they did five weeks later – on March 25. Mexican officials unceremoniously evicted Vanguard from Mexico, and at US taxpayer expense delivered him to the West Texas Town of El Paso.
Since that fateful day, Raniere has been in custody.
Trial Did Not Go Well
In Brooklyn, a federal jury convicted Raniere of racketeering conspiracy, racketeering, forced labor conspiracy (wire fraud conspiracy); sex trafficking conspiracy, sex trafficking, and attempted sex trafficking. Judge Nicholas Garaufis sentenced Raniere to 120 years, as yet unserved, and a $250,000 fine as yet unpaid.
Raniere appealed on legal insufficiency, constitutional challenges, and on the basis that “a commercial sex act” required an exchange of money or financial benefits to qualify for sex trafficking. The Second Circuit disagreed, and the Supreme Court declined to hear him on April 17, 2023.
Raniere also has a Rule 33 motion pending based on his claims that the FBI planted evidence to convict him.
In his latest motion claiming his lawyers were inept, Raniere makes a plethora of arguments why these blundering idiots dropped the ball on an innocent man.
He knows what needs to be done. The law says if the lawyers blew it, the court must order the gates to be opened, his cell to be unlocked, his street clothes returned. With a pat on the back and the hearty handclasp, the warden should arrange an Uber to send him to one or more of his adoring supporters.
In the coming articles, FR will examine the world’s smartest man’s pro se motion to set aside his conviction, based on the fact that the $10 or $15 million his adoring devotee Clare Bronfman invested in his legal defense and attack on his conviction was entirely ineffective.
Legatus Stands Tall
Clare Bronfman, who in some circles is known as Legatus, remains devoted to her Vanguard from her max security prison in Philadelphia, while her prince resides in lovely Tucson in his max security prison.
Not long ago, she was admonished by Raniere through his followers for putting her need to get out of prison ahead of his need to do likewise.
The high-minded, if intellectually challenged heiress, who has squandered most of her inheritance on her Vanguard, accepted the chastisement with the grace and demeanor of a perfect imbecile, of which all who know her know without a doubt that that is exactly what she is.
Stay tuned, won’t you, for our series on why Raniere thinks his attorneys didn’t do jack shit, and as we said at the top of this article, had they only done better and not been so horrid, he’d be a free man right now.

Completely agree about the decision to not have him testify. I was blown away. I get why he didn’t testify, but him putting on a show was their chance to whittle down the charges.

When defendants file motions with nine times the maximum 25-page length allowed, judges can and often do tear off and throw away all pages after number 25. Not following the page limit rule isn’t just stupid, it can guarantee that any of a defendant’s arguments made after page 25, legitimate or not, are not considered by the court.

We’re a bunch of cynics and haters on the Frank Report. We love to put someone else down to make ourselves feel better. Although reading over the first 60 pages of Raniere’s motion makes me think he is right about the technical points he is presenting.
1) His lawyers did not do their due diligence with several key issues. Rainiere was not deported from Mexico, he was illegally rendered while having a valid Mexican visa and having broken no laws.
2) Interstate commerce in the committing of a sex act never occurred and there was no commerce involved.
3) Evidence was illegally obtained and manipulated as verified by a former FBI agent.
All these things would be enough for a normal person to get a re-trial or possibly have the charges dropped. But,Raniere is not normal and Judge Garaufis is of the mind that Raniere shall never see the light of day again.
So, in the end, it doesn’t matter or does it? Raniere is an ambitious, arrogant asshole we all hate, he’s deserves it, right? But, how would you feel if your rights were violated egregiously and you knew the prosecutor and judge did not care about justice, Penza used it as a stepping to do private work at a major firm and Garaufis gets the think he saved womanhood from a madman. So, what does it matter, or does it?
Why would Raniere need a Visa to be in Mexico? Any US citizen can be in Mexico without a visa without one for 180 days.
Raniere never left Albany NY for more than a couple of weeks before in his entire career of running NXIVM.
Where is his proof he had this so called Visa?
Raniere had many Mexican fathers who hated him. He’s lucky that all that happen was is his ass got hauled crossed the boarder to the US and not worse. He tool advantage of many Mexican young girls. Some of legal age, but still. He did some NASTY things to these women.
Raniere also rushed his legal team for a SPEEDY trail.
He could of asked Judge Garaufis for an extension and one would of been granted to give his team more time to work on these details he is now trying to bring forward.
It’s only a matter of time before Raniere runs out of options to get out of prison. He isn’t going to.
Feel sorry for him if you want. He is guilty of more than he was arrested for. He will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Perhaps, he planned on staying longer than 180 days? In any case, it is not legal to deport anyone without a legal proceeding in the country of origin (Mexico). You can’t pick someone up off the street and just go bring them across an international border.. Yet, that is what was done.
I do feel sorry for him; but he also put himself in this situation with his sick behavior and lack of remorse at trial.
180 days is quite a long vacation. He probably wanted to stay in Mexico permanently. Perhaps also to continue his criminal RICO business from Mexico.
It’ been mentioned he set himself up for this. I agree. He could have reflected, taken responsibility for the harm he caused, apologized, accepted punishment via a plea bargain and eventually he would have been returned from life in prison to society. He chose his self-righteous/ arrogant path and is suffering the consequences.
One take-away is everyone can change but one must be humble enough to allow it to occur.
Not sure if it is us making ourselves feel better. For me, I just cannot stand rich, entitled assholes who hate regular people like me. The Nxivm asswipes spent a fortune trying to lock up Kieth’s exes and other innocent people. I was just happy to see them all go down. Piling on is just fun, not a self-esteem booster.

They are attorneys. They are not spiritual. They are not divine. They are individuals who are permitted to act with no oversight— void of oversight and any checks and balances, lives are taken on the whim of a judge.
