Vignettes From the Sandusky Trial: Prosecution Altered Bob Costas NBC Audio, Got Caught, But Judge Does Nothing

February 21, 2024
NBC sportscaster Bob Costas interviews Jerry Sandusky on November 14, 2011.

The following is the first of a many part series I call ‘Vignettes from the Sandusky Trial.’

Bob Costas was a premier sportscaster with NBC-TV from 1980 to 2019.

He broadcast for Super Bowls, World Series, and Olympic Games.

He won 29 Emmy Awards, including one under the ‘News and Documentary’ category for his Nov. 14, 2011 interview with Jerry Sandusky on NBC’s newsmagazine program “Rock Center.”

It was just a week after the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania charged Sandusky with the sexual molestation of ten men, who were boys at the time of their alleged abuse.

The interview was unplanned.

Costas was expecting only to interview Joseph Amendola, the lawyer for Sandusky, who was with Costas at the studio.

“About 10 or 15 minutes prior to the start of the interview,” Costas later explained, “Amendola says to us, on his own: ‘What if I could get Sandusky on the phone?’”

As Amendola sat on stage next to Costas, adding a bizarre nature to the interview, Costas conducted a phone interview with Sandusky.

One of Costas’s questions was whether Sandusky was sexually attracted to underage boys.

  • BOB COSTAS: Are you sexually attracted to young boys, to underage boys?
  • JERRY SANDUSKY: Am I sexually attracted to underage boys?
  • BOB COSTAS: Yes.
  • JERRY SANDUSKY: Sexually attracted, you know, I — I enjoy young people. I — I love to be around them. I — I — but no I’m not sexually attracted to young boys.

Costas’s interview, and particularly Sandusky’s answer to the question above, received considerable attention after it was broadcast.

Because the media strongly reinforced the presumption of guilt, Sandusky’s answer was not interpreted literally – which was that he was not sexually attracted to boys, but rather the opposite: as an admission of guilt.

At the 2012 trial, the Costas interview was admitted into evidence by the prosecution and played to the jury.

The following day, Judge John Cleland told the jury, “Yesterday you heard audio of a TV interview. There were some errors in that audio.”

Cleland said he would not tell the jury what the errors were, and would not replay the correct version of the audio to them.

Instead, he told the jury, “There will be a transcript of the correct version of that audio that you heard,” and that jurors needed to base their deliberations on the transcript of the Costas interview, rather than the audiotape.

The reason there were some “errors” in that audio was that the prosecution team of Frank Fina, Jonelle Eshbach and Joe McGettigan altered the audio to have Costas asking Sandusky to answer twice (instead of once) whether he was sexually attracted to young boys.

The prosecution cheated so many times that I am to call them collectively “Legion.” However, instead of hammering the prosecution for their deception, Judge Cleland protected them. He did not want the jury distracted from the guilty verdict he was doing everything in his power to secure.

Step by step, I will introduce overwhelming evidence that Sandusky did not get a fair trial, that the prosecutors were dishonest, the media not only got it wrong, but their bias helped ensure the unfair trial, and that all eight accusers at trial told false stories, knowing that they would be rich men.

They all became millionaires.

And I will present overwhelming evidence that Sandusky is innocent.

Prediction: FR along with Cruz, Snedden and others, will expose one of the greatest scandals that occurred right under the noses of the American public.

Jerry Sandusky will be freed and Joe Paterno’s statue will be returned to its rightful spot at Penn State.

Poor, poor unlucky Jerry. After being accused of inappropriately touching a boy in a shower and warned by police never to shower with boys again, well he just couldn’t help himself! He HAD to shower naked with little boys again! And then to have two unrelated parties on different occasions, the janitor and McQueary, believe they witnessed him molesting boys in the same shower …what bad luck! And then somehow to be unable to just answer “No, of course not” when asked if he was sexually attracted to young boys. More bad luck I guess! Good old heart of gold Jerry is the unluckiest innocent saint the world has ever seen…

Check your facts. You’re wrong. Stop spreading the lies the media promoted without basis that allowed an innocent man to be legally railroaded and his life taken.

Your ignorance in light of all evidence presented, suggests you’re one of the money grabbing scoundrels.

Many think Joe Amendola was “overwhelmed” by what he was up against and that’s why he failed Sandusky.

He sacrificed Sandusky

More than once he caught his client unaware and with no legal preparation had him make decisions (like appearing with Costas) which were detrimental to his case.

Look at Flynn in the case of Steve Pigeon. He violated rules of conduct many times to secure a bullshit indictment, but nothing is done – zero consequence even when blatant violations are evident

Condoning illegal conduct of prosecutors is an everyday occurrence. The bar is a joke- the only attorneys punished in any meaningful way are those who expose the government.

Even when sanctions are brought, the verdict based in part on the presentation of prosecutors, is allowed to stand.

Joe Amendola, promote thyself defense counsel.

He threw Sandusky under the bus, thinking his career as a legal media consultant was secured.

Another dumb cluck.

Bob Costas is spineless and quick to bring anyone down.
Even after Kobe Bryant’s tragic death, Costas couldn’t leave him alone and instead focused on an allegation of sexual assault- one he was never criminally charged with.

Bob Costas is a very little man in majy ways.

Kobe wasn’t charged because he paid of the accuser. Everyone knows that.

He wasn’t criminally charged but it was a major news story for a long time. What Costas said wasn’t even that big of a big deal.

Costas doesn’t have a problem saying what he believes in. I don’t always agree with him, but I appreciate that he doesn’t mute his opinions.

Thank you Frank for shedding more light on this sham of a trial and rush to judgment.

Frank you are doing a tremendous job AND a difficult one. My son Chad spent many hours and days with Jerry while growing up in State College. Being a single parent busy with college and work, Jerry and Dottie filled in the gap and treated him like family. Chad and I always knew Jerry was innocent and never should have been convicted. A loving, caring, giving, honest, and compassionate man is spending his last days in jail instead of with his family and friends. All because of greed and money. We PRAY that he gets a new trial so the snakes will eventually have to crawl.

Yeah my friend’s son went to one of Jerry’s camps and all the kids who had been there before knew that Jerry was handsy and weird and were warning each other not to be alone with him ever.

The injustices done to Jerry Sandusky are unfathomable. This segment is one part of the corrupt atty general’s office of PA in 2011. Corbett, Fina, McGettigan, Eshbach, kelly, Cleland, sassano, among others should be imprisoned for their conduct in this case. Shameful, deceitful, and evil!

I have been praying that someone would be brave enough to take on these deceiptful people. Jerry should not be in prison because he did not do those horrible things that these men said he did. He didn;t have a chance. I know my cousin very well to tell
you that he would have confessed by now if he had done such a thing. He is so kind and caring he told his kids to stay away so the media wouldn’t attack them he loves his family and he will protect them as best as he can. We grew up together and he has always been a jokster and happy go lucky but would not hurt a fly. These men should be ashamed of themselves for doing this to him just for money you know there is always Karma! I told this to Amendola and to Judge Cleland but obviously they did not hear because they didn’t want to, they are just as much to blame as these men and should have their licenses taken away never to hurt another person again.

Bob Costas could have come out and declared Sandusky innocent but like many cowards before him, he chose to remain silent to protect his brand.

This is so true of so much of what went on at Jerry Sandusky’s trial. Thanks for bringing it out. The world needs to know.
