Keith Alan Raniere was whisked out of the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center [MDC] in the early morning hours of January 6, and presumably put on a prisoners’ bus to parts unknown.
None of our sources knew exactly where he was headed, at least not immediately, but we were told his final destination was the United States Penitentiary Tucson and that there might be a stop in Oklahoma City.
Where Is Keith Raniere Now?
By the evening of the 6th, he arrived at the United States Penitentiary at Lewisburg, a high-security prison in Pennsylvania for male inmates, and he bedded down there for the night.
He remained there the next night as well, and we recently learned he is to remain there, according to a source at the Bureau of Prisons, for a total of 14 days for Covid-19 quarantine. He has been there now for three days.
We have no definite knowledge of where Keith Raniere goes next.
According to our source at Lewisburg, Raniere may remain there for a little while beyond his quarantine period. Presently, the MDC is undergoing renovations and reportedly Lewisburg is taking on some MDC inmates, such as Raniere. He remains within 500 miles of the Brooklyn Court. The theory is that he may possibly go back to MDC or remain in Lewisburg until his court proceedings are over, which is expected within the next three months.
However, another Bureau of Prisons (BOP) source from Grand Prairie itself, the administrative headquarters of the BOP, said that Raniere is off to Tucson next.
This sounds more plausible to us since MDC is a holding center for pre-trial and pre-sentencing detainees. Raniere has been sentenced and evidently assigned to Tucson. MDC would want to ship him out and not linger at MDC.
At MDC, they don’t want guys with 120-year sentences. Those kinds of guys have nothing to lose. At MDC, most of the detainees there are on their best behavior while waiting for trial or waiting for sentencing. They try to move people already sentenced out as quickly as possible.
Though Keith Raniere made a reasonable argument to remain at MDC for a few months at least.
Raniere’s new attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, asked Judge Nicholas Garaufis to recommend Raniere remain at MDC, so he could be near at hand for his appeal and for the restitution hearings that he might need to take an active role in, which are expected to take place in February.
Ironically, the BOP moved Raniere out within hours of her filing her request to the judge.
If they moved him hastily to avoid a possible recommendation by the judge to keep him here, it was unnecessary. Judge Garaufis has steadfastly refused to get involved in Raniere’s prison assignment.
His reply to Bonjean’s request was in the negative: “ORDER re Defendant’s [989] letter: As previously stated at the time of sentencing, the court again respectfully declines to make a recommendation to the Bureau of Prisons regarding the designation of the Defendant. Ordered by Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis on 1/8/2021.”
What’s Life Like at Lewisburg Penitentiary?
If he remains at Lewisburg after his quarantine, Raniere, because of his notoriety and his designation as a sex offender, will not likely be comfortable there. He may have to remain in solitary for his own safety.
Lewisburg is all ganged up. There are gangs there such as the Bloods, Crips, MS 13, Nietas, Rat Hunters, Zulu Nation, Latin Kings, Aryan Nation, etc. – and Raniere will not easily be able to navigate in that highly segregated environment where everyone is either a member of something or he is nothing.
Raniere, being known to be a CHOMO, or child molester, will not have a ghost of a chance at living any kind of a normal prison life there since inmates target sex offenders and particularly child molesters for violence and other abuses.
This is why he was assigned to USP Tucson since that facility is comprised of mostly sex offenders and, hence, he won’t be singled out because he is a sex offender. He will be but one among the herd.
Raniere is nearing completion of his third year of a 120-year sentence.
However, if he does remain in Lewisburg to serve any portion of his sentence, he might be qualified to work at an off-site work location where inmates labor in a furniture-manufacturing factory. Prisoners get about $2 per hour for the factory work, which is substantially better than the 25 cents per hour that prison workers get while laboring inside prison.
Oddly, according to one Society of Protectors recruitment video, at one time, Raniere made as much as $100,000 per hour consulting with some of the top executives in the world.
Still, I would not expect Raniere to remain at Lewisburg [or go back to MDC]. We think he will be motoring west, by bus, in handcuffs and shackles, a belly chain and the black box, and wind up in Tucson, where he will be prepared for the long haul, unless of course he wins on appeal.
If he gets a reversal on appeal, he may get a new trial and be brought back to Brooklyn. That won’t likely happen before 2022, if it happens at all.
In succeeding posts we will explore the life Raniere will lead in Tucson and the odds of his winning on appeal in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

Why is it speculated how Keith will live in prison, from my point of view it is more important that his new lawyer can speak with him in person
Does anyone know where Keith is now? Feels like we are in 1984 or under the rule of the KGB. People can simply just disappear with no contact with anyone.
As of 11:30 AM on Sunday, January 17th, Keith was still ensconced at the U.S. Penitentiary in Lewisburg, PA. The weather there today is mostly cloudy — with a high of 41 degrees and a low of 33 degrees.
Another letter sent to Trump should be cami’s victim impact statement. Give him a fuller picture.
Sex offenses make up only a portion of the crimes Raniere committed, so he fits into many categories of offenders. That is why I think he can end up in prisons other than Tucson.

Prison grapevines work faster than the internet in terms of spreading information about inmates. It’s also not unusual for guards to share information about new arrivals — including, at times, copies of their official BOP files.

Thank you for the information, Frank. Do you know how common it is for judges to decline “to make a recommendation to the Bureau of Prisons regarding the designation of the Defendant”? And what is the reason given for this?
Frank may want to add to this but let me share with you my experience e and understanding of the process:
– I don’t know what percentage of judges make recommendations to the BOP as to where a prisoner should be placed — but, in general, it doesn’t matter. Once someone is in the custody of the BOP, the agency has the sole responsibility of deciding where to place prisoners.
– I have been told that the BOP is more likely to take into consideration placement recommendations that were part of a plea deal — and that although prosecutors will not write letters to the BOP on behalf of defendants, they will make phone calls to the agency on behalf of defendants who were especially cooperative and helpful.
– The BOP utilizes some prisons for special categories of inmates (e.g., Devens is used for inmates with severe medical problems; Otisville is used for Hasidic Jewish inmates; USP Tucson is used for inmates who have been convicted of sex crimes; etc.).
Thanks again for publishing these updates, Frank. And for the extra context. I was shocked to read about the low hourly wages that inmates receive for their labor. Something about that seems inhumane and above-and-beyond an inmate’s prison sentence.
The basis for the low wages — and for lots of other BOP procedures and rules — is that prisoners are considered to be “slaves” in the U.S. Consitution. Although the 13th Amendment did, in fact, ban slavery in the U.S., it included an exception for prisoners.

There are legitimate battles to fight for prison and justice system reform. The efforts on Vanguard’s behalf are a stain and distraction from the real warriors in the fight.
I would like to see some sourced info on the behavior in prison. this seems to imply that bad behavior is to come because of the 120 years of sentence and having nothing to lose so to speak. that didn’t seem like a neutral response for accurate data

Hadn’t considered the possibility that Keith might be safer in a prison such as Tucson because he will be amongst a population charged and convicted with the same charges as he has.
I am not for any person getting hurt so I hope he gets there sooner rather than later.

A lot of people writing stories and commenting here didn’t consider that, either. Many were in favor of and predicting Raniere would end up in a Supermax, which would be a misuse of that kind of a facility and our tax dollars. It’s not like Raniere is the only sex pervert who was ever convicted.
The only reasons to consider putting Keith in the Supermax prison were (1) to protect him from attacks by other inmates; and (2) to separate him from his followers. Even then, I would agree that any such placement should have only been done on a temporary basis.
USP Tucson has been specifically designated by the BOP as a SOMP prison — and has the highest percentage of prisoners convicted of sex crimes of any federal prison.
BOP took him early the day after the defense requested for him to stay at MDC to allow a proper communication.
And instead they drove him to Lewisburg where it is known that gangs are dangerous specially for the CHOMO charges that Keith has been convicted for.
He might spend some time there and it would be risky.
Why there and not some safer prison?
Why not fly straight to the destination?
Some people thinks that due process was violated and appealing might show these.
Judiciary system should handle this notorious case with extreme care.
They have recent racial examples that things might get out of control.
Raniere is probably in solitary confinement for two weeks to confirm he isn’t going to spread the beer virus and then end up in Tucson.
Not even sure to start with all this misinformation…but here’s what I know:
– Keith was told several days in advance that he was about to be moved. I think they packed up most of his belongings at least a day before he was moved.
– Most prisoners who are being moved are awakened early — and brought down to an administrative office for processing. As you might expect, BOP wants to make sure it is transferring the right guy to the right place.
– There are just as many gangs at MDC as there are at Lewisburg. Keith was being housed in a special unit at MDC to keep him away from gangs — and the same will be true at Lewisburg.
– Prisoner moves usually take several weeks to plan. In Keith’s case, he was put on a bus that makes weekly trips around the various federal prisons in the Northeast — and taken to Lewisburg.
– From Lewisburg, Keith will likely be bussed to the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City, OK — which is where most Con-Air flights go through. He previously went stayed there on his way to New York City from Mexico.
– I am not aware of any due process violations that occurred during Keith’s transfer. If you know of some, please share that info with frank Report readers.
– Sometimes, a prisoner transfer is just a prisoner transfer.This appears to be one of those times.

We now have these new-fangled inventions called telephones and airplanes, have you heard?
Yes, there are telephones and airplanes, but why the need to push it to that point already, when it makes no sense. Anyone with a brain would agree that it is unreasonable to send KR to another facility before he finishes out his final hearings, and before he has any chance to speak with Ms. Bonjean.
The only logical explanation is that the BOP knows their case against KR is weak and manufactured, and the easiest way to hide their tracks is to lower the possibility of Bonjean having full access with him.
Really? Well, off the top of my head, I can think of several more “logical explanations” for moving Keith out of MDC now:
– Except for a hundred or so Cadre inmates, MDC is not used to house inmates who have already been convicted and sentenced. Thus, it made sense to move Keith to another location — especially since MDC is running out of space because of all the COVID-19-related trial delays and sentencing delays.
– MDC and Lewisburg are in the same BOP Region — and routinely swap inmates who need to be moved to a new location.
– USP Tucson is considered to be a safe placement for those inmates who have been convicted of a sex crime. As a result, it is always full — and when an opening is scheduled to occur, the BOP tries to fill that opening as quickly as possible.
– Despite the fact that he has hired a new attorney, there is no guaranty that Keith is actually going to file an appeal.
– Keith need not be present in person for the restitution hearings — which will very likely be held via videoconference.
– The BOP can always move Keith back to MDC on a temporary basis if his attorney can convince a judge there is a need to do so.
– Lewisburg is on the way to USP Tucson.
– Keith committed numerous violations while he was at MDC (e.g., possession of cell phones, other contraband, etc.).
– Keith has gotten beat up by other inmates whenever he’s been put into a general population setting at MDC.
And on and on…
If we’re going to make a list of arguments, I suppose I will counter yours, in order (not that it’ll change your mind).
– This point would make sense if KR had been moved out of MDC right after his sentencing. However, they waited for months, so they don’t seem to be struggling too much with inmate space.
– If it’s so routine and easy to swap inmates, then it will be just as easy to do so in a couple of months.
– I understand that USP Tucson is the best option, I support that decision. I understand it may be hard to secure a spot in, but regardless of when a spot opens up, he still has to complete the 2-week quarantine. There is no explanation for why they chose to move him to Lewisburg to complete the quarantine when it would take the same amount of time to do so at MDC. Unless the move is to get him away from Bonjean asap.
– I feel like this one is just silly. Of course, he’s going to file an appeal, and he’ll keep doing so until his innocence is agreed upon.
– Will they allow him videoconferencing to meet with his attorney? If so, that’s one point, but why bother with videoconferencing when he has more obligation to be in Brooklyn. No need to create extra work by moving him to Lewisburg.
– This would be fair, except Garafuis has a stick up his ass, so you know that’s a moot point.
– Yes, we know Lewisburg is on the way to Tucson, and it will still be on the way to Tucson in a couple of months.
– MDC is a facility that is able to hold inmates of all security levels, implying they have the exact same capability of holding KR as Lewisburg (a high-security facility) does. If both facilities can function at high-security, then the location holds no significance to KR slipping contraband past security.
– KR would be unable to get assaulted if he would be placed in quarantine at MDC, or if he would be placed in PC like the facility should do, as they hold the responsibility of protecting the inmates in their custody.
And on and on and on…
Do you think the BOP can take requests from every rapist and child molester and their fans? It is prison. It is punitive. They cannot accommodate Keith and his cult and not all the other prisoners and their families’ wishes. Sounds like you expect special treatment to continue for Vanguard. That’s over. He is already using other people’s money to fund his legal defense. Why don’t you worry about the prisoners who don’t have that luxury? Who’s being paid to look out for their rights? Maybe you could volunteer to help them?
It is sweet and fitting that Raniere should serve out his sentence amongst his own kind: namely Sex Offenders. Anything else would be wildly inappropriate, including a Supermax.
Let him wear the cap that fits.

The U.S. Bureau of Prisons maintains a database regarding the location of every federal prisoner — and that database can be accessed by the general public. Besides, if you think that someone like Keith Raniere can be transferred to a new prison without every other prisoner there knowing about it within 24-hours, you don’t understand how prisons work.

Right, Frank, it is important to make clear, the use of the web
KOLD13, Tuscon TV, reported on December 20, 2020 that 2 men had died recently from COVID who were prisoners at the United States Penitentiary, Tuscon. Both were above seventy years of age and had certain, um, ah, er, whatchamacallits, pre-existing conditions. Both were also cared for at the prison infirmary before being sent to local hospitals, eventually put on ventilators, and so much for that.
Arizona state prisons are notorious, but this federal prison, well, it would be hard to imagine it could be worse than Joe Arpaio-land ever managed to be.
If Raniere does have to drop off briefly in Oklahoma, will Frank Report readers get to know, while or after it happens? It would be good to tune into Raniere’s escorted body searches more or less on the spot. Oklahoma HAS stories not fit for print, too scary for the prairie. But never mind all that. This is Raniere’s ticket to ride. A star at last, by golly.

We access the Federal Prisoner Locator System several times a day to check on Keith’s status (It’s usually no more than a day behind in terms of where federal prisoners are located). As of 8:00 AM on January 10th, he was still ensconced at USP Lewisburg.

If they’re so confident in their “air-tight case”, why the need to push things along to prevent KR talking with his attorney(which is supposed to be one of the few rights he maintains currently)? They’re completely ignoring BOP protocol for quarantine. Why bother to quarantine now after he has already moved facilities, and had a perfectly capable place to quarantine back at MDC? Ridiculous.
He was already going to be moved.
