PRESS RELEASE NXIVM LEADER KEITH RANIERE SENTENCED TO 120 YEARS IN PRISON FOR RACKETEERING AND SEX TRAFFICKING OFFENSES
Keith Raniere, the founder and leader of Nxivm, was sentenced today to 120 years in prison by United States District Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis in federal court in Brooklyn. Raniere was convicted by a federal jury in June 2019 of racketeering, racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, attempted sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy, forced labor conspiracy and wire fraud conspiracy. The Court also imposed a fine of $1,750,000. At the sentencing hearing, the Court heard victim impact statements from 15 individuals, including “Camila,” the victim who was sexually exploited by Raniere when she was 15 years old. A hearing on victim restitution will be held at a later date.
Seth D. DuCharme, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, William F. Sweeney, Jr., Assistant Director-in-Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York Field Office (FBI), and Jonathan D. Larsen, Special Agent-in-Charge, Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation, New York Field Office (IRS-CI), announced the sentence.
“The 120-year sentence imposed on Keith Raniere today is a measure of his appalling crimes committed over a decade,” stated Acting United States Attorney DuCharme. “Raniere exploited and abused his victims emotionally, physically and sexually for his personal gratification. It is my hope that today’s sentence brings closure to the victims and their families.” Mr. DuCharme extended his grateful appreciation to the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, the New York State Police and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York for their valuable assistance during the investigation and prosecution.
“Raniere’s reign of control over the women he scarred, both physically and emotionally, is the making of a horror story. It is inconceivable to think of the sexual exploitation, abuse, seclusion, and mind control his victims suffered—at his direction. Today the judge has given him 120 years to think about whether or not the torture he inflicted on others for more than a decade, and the distress he brought to their families, was worth it in the end,” stated FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge Sweeney.
“Sexual exploitation of children and women is among the most reprehensible and vile forms of crime,” stated IRS-CI Special Agent-in-Charge Larsen. “While Keith Raniere’s sentence cannot erase the pain his victims have endured, I hope it provides an opportunity for healing and a path forward. Today’s sentencing should be a warning for criminals around the world. Regardless of the illegal enterprise and whether the profits are tangible or not, IRS-CI will decode illicit schemes and hold criminals accountable for the pain, suffering and financial abuse of their victims.”
Raniere led a criminal racketeering enterprise and relied on an “inner circle” of co-conspirators to carry out his orders. The purpose of the enterprise was to promote Raniere and to recruit individuals into purported self-help organizations that Raniere founded, including Nxivm and DOS (“Dominus Obsequious Sororium”). Raniere and his co-conspirators committed a wide range of criminal activity, including sex trafficking, forced labor, alien smuggling, wire fraud and obstruction of justice. Specifically, Raniere sexually exploited “Camila,” then a 15-year-old child, and took photographs of his abuse. At the time, Raniere was 45 years old. Raniere and his co-conspirators also trafficked “Daniela” for labor and services and confined her to a room for nearly two years in an attempt to force Daniela to do work for him. Daniela was told that if she left the room, she would be sent to Mexico without any identification documents. Daniela went months without human contact and was denied prompt medical care. During this time, Daniela wrote hundreds of letters to Raniere pleading to be released from her confinement. Daniela testified at trial that while confined to the room, she contemplated suicide.
In late 2015, Raniere created and led DOS, a secret organization in which women were recruited under the false pretense of joining a women-only mentorship group, later discovering that they had taken “vows of obedience” to women who were “slaves” to Raniere. Prospective DOS victims were required to provide “collateral”—including damaging confessions about themselves and loved ones (truthful or not), rights to financial assets, and sexually explicit photographs and videos—to prevent them from leaving the group or disclosing its existence to others. Raniere required DOS “slaves” to take nude photographs, perform labor, and in some cases, to engage in sex acts with him. As proved at trial, the victims “Nicole” and “Jay” were among the DOS victims directed to have sex with Raniere.
Each of Raniere’s co-defendants previously pleaded guilty. On September 2020, Clare Bronfman was sentenced to 81 months’ imprisonment after having been convicted of conspiracy to conceal and harbor aliens for financial gain and fraudulent use of personal identification information. The remaining co-defendants are awaiting sentencing. On March 12, 2019, Nancy Salzman, Nxivm’s president and co-founder, pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy. On March 25, 2019, Lauren Salzman, a first-line “master” in DOS, pleaded guilty to racketeering and racketeering conspiracy. On April 8, 2019, Allison Mack, another first-line “master” in DOS, pleaded guilty to racketeering and racketeering conspiracy. On April 19, 2019, Kathy Russell, a bookkeeper for Nxivm, pleaded guilty to visa fraud.
The government’s case is being handled by the Office’s Organized Crime and Gangs Section. Assistant United States Attorneys Tanya Hajjar, Mark J. Lesko and Kevin Trowel are in charge of the prosecution. Assistant United States Attorney Karin Orenstein of the Office’s Civil Division is handling forfeiture matters.

It’s actually concerning the way she attacks other women. She even does an impression of Sarah crying. Her contempt for the women who were sleeping with Keith is evident when they are mentioned. Yet, she’s promoting this interview like it’s the best thing ever.

Nicki’s interview was horrible. Her hate for women was so clear. It did make me appreciate how Frank interviewed her. Frank did not give her any power. Scott was kinda flirting with her, giving her a lot of validation. They discussed together the victims as if they were making things up. Invalidating anything they felt. I really appreciated that when Frank interviewed Nicki he did not validate her. I think that is how you need to deal with psychopaths. Be cold and direct with them.

There is some free speech in some prisons so it will depend I suppose. Warren Jeffs of the FLD made some pretty awful orders for his people in his cult from the Texan prison where he is for example.
Notable is Raniere’s flat effect. When he spoke in court, the feeling out of him was as flat as the top of an ironing board. He continued to say that he is more or less just misunderstood, as if his entire saga of selfish malignancy doesn’t exist. Apparently to him, he has simply been misinterpreted. Evidently he still has no comprehension, not that any was ever expected out of him.
Also, Raniere already knew his jig was up, so the now defined length of his incarceration really could not have been any surprise. Flat, flat. He’s flattened, but that is only his real self catching up with him, at last.

There is no parole in the federal prison system. The best he can do is earn time off for “good behavior” – which would reduce his sentence to 102 years.

Dave, as of November 1, 1987, there is no parole granted to prisoners in the Federal system. So, Vanguard will serve his entire sentence without the possibility of parole. He may, however, get time off for good behavior – and if that is the case, he will serve 102 years.

Former Prisoner Speaks
As mentioned, I’ve been there before. Been in prison. And, I keep my life clean so there’s no return trip.
I’m against capital punishment and I’m ‘mostly’ against life sentences for ‘most’ prisoners. Why? Simply put, I needed hope in my life. The ability to be released and to be released early was a super motivator to live my life correctly, immediately. I deeply regret my actions that put me there but knowing there was a tangible ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ provided relief to the pain, aloneness, boredom and abuse most encounter in prison. I’d like to see this ‘light’ be extended to most everyone.
Hope and reconciliation with the past are necessary ingredients in everyone’s life. It doesn’t matter what your life circumstances are; we all need the hope we can change and we all need forgiveness and reconciliation with our past. Knowing you can go home one day if you lead your life correctly is so important and I want to see everyone have the chance that I had.
It is very easy to be cruel. It is easy to scorn people who have broken the law and committed crimes. It is much harder to open one’s heart, show them there is a way back to society, and give a chance to earn that privilege to come back and start over. So, I ask all of you who hate and demonize others to open your hearts, even to those who have broken the law to allow others to have another chance.
This chance greatly depends on the crime, FP/AA, obviously. Glib statements like: give everyone a chance, collapse the minute an actual comparison arises IRL, KR has had years at MDC to reevaluate his behaviour, all the others too.
I agree it’s crucial to lead as many people as possible, irrespective of their errors, to the water…but once there? We all have a choice about how to behave in the next moment, and the next…we cannot ‘drink’ or ‘think’ for someone else, not even wishing with all your heart will make it so.
He is a sociopath. There is no healing that. No “light at the end of a tunnel” will help this man. He needs to be locked away in a cell until his life is over. I have empathy for a lot of folks – including his very mentally ill followers who are making a mockery of themselves trying to defend the reprehensible actions of their guru. I hear what you are saying, and I agree for many other kinds of criminals. This man, however, is a living monster who is not capable of being rehabilitated.
I’ve seen some sociopaths change. The process usually involves some form of religious conversion where the sociopath – after a life-altering, traumatic event – re-centers their life around helping others. So, they are no longer the focus of their life – respecting and helping others around them is now the focus. A similar process happens in AA where the alcoholic becomes sober by finding God and helping other alcoholics become sober.
Everyone makes mistakes, so I generally agree with you about second chances. The destruction to families for incarceration is horrible, as in “must be a better way.”
But to Vanguard, this was a way of life. A giant multi-level marketing scheme that showed no end, no remorse, no empathy at all for his victims. It was going to be a bigger and bigger pipeline of supply to him.
Think “narcissistic supply”, and it makes sense.
FP, it seems in your case, you experienced remorse and an honest desire to change, so a second chance was warranted. I applaud you for taking it. The difference here is that Keith has no remorse and if let free, would immediately cause more damage. Therefore in his case, I support the sentence.
I read elsewhere that the numbered-year sentence (as opposed to life) gives the powers that be (BOP?) a little flexibility for an early compassionate release in the event he becomes very ill or infirm, at the end of his life. Had he been given simply “life,” there would be no flexibility. At least that’s what I read.
Just prior to sentencing, Keith went to great pains to prove what he is capable of doing, even from jail: Formulating misleading PR campaigns, galvanizing followers, subtly threatening the judge and prosecutors. When you look at this along with the threatening letters he had sent to victims/potential witnesses in 2017, I think most of us believe he represents a continuing danger. He will neither repent nor reform – he simply is not capable of it.
Had he handled many things differently, he might have gotten 15 years with credit for time served and time off for good behavior. That would have been his light at the end of the tunnel, but in his superior intellect, he threw it all away.
In any event, our system gives him the right to appeal his conviction, which he will do. My sympathy to the victims, who will have to continue to nail bite through his future machinations.
You are a thoughtful and intelligent poster. I’m also very concerned he took no accountability and showed no remorse. Both are fundamental to healing and change. I’m hopeful he will arrive at that point someday, for his good and for the good of all.
Thank you for sharing that. I appreciate your view on this – I think it is possible to turn a life around and find a better path. I also know that it is not possible for some. Psychopaths, malignant narcissists, disorders in that spectrum – there is little hope for change. For someone like Raniere who falls into that category (and from personal experience with him, I know this to be true), the best we can do is prevent him from harming others. In this case, I think the greater good is served by his permanent removal from society. If we someday find a cure for psychopathy, a way to somehow help someone grow the emotions and conscience needed to live in society without harming others, it will be a beautiful day. But it doesn’t exist now. I’m glad that you had a chance to find a better path – live it well.
Sure, some prisoners deserve a second chance for their mistakes depending upon the crime. But apparently, Raniere is too much of a malignant narcissist to show remorse. The judge basically threw the book at him because he called his victims liars and didn’t show it. If he behaved himself during the trial and while in MDC awaiting his sentencing and showed remorse (even if he faked it like he has done in the past lying about things quite easily), he likely would’ve garnered the minimum sentence of 15 years, and since he already served two of them, would’ve been out at 72 years old or even earlier with good behavior. But because apparently he chose to arrogate himself and increase his sociopathic tendencies everyday of his life, he…just…couldn’t…do it. And this is his end result.
That’s a fair point about a large number if not the majority of prisoners, and how our justice system handles them. We do a poor job of taking rehabilitation into account, and besides issues of what is morally or ethically right, it is simply short-sighted because most prisoners will end up back in society and out on the streets.
However, there are a smaller number of dangerous sociopaths and psychopaths who are incorrigible and remorseless, serial predators who just need to be locked up away from society so that they can do no more harm – though they’re often still dangerous behind bars, the sort of prisoners who for instance murder guards and inmates. I think Raniere belongs in that category, and that most experts would agree he cannot be rehabilitated and will always pose a danger.
Yes. It is a moral responsibility to keep the percentage of prisoners who are sociopaths locked away from society. We understand the nature of these people so much better than we did in the 1970s or 1980s.

I still find this horror story shocking. But also that Keith’s helpers didn’t realize in time where their organization had gone. I don’t think brainwashing is a reason to serve these crazy ideas. If they weren’t for Keith, he wouldn’t have been able to go through with his freak crimes. They’re going to get away with it a little bit. Actually Linda is a very educated person. While I don’t agree with her view of Raniere, I do think she is sincere and I believe she has a law degree and may be working to help on the appeal.
The flood of evidence that is now coming in, after Raniere’s conviction, should be enough to convince even the greatest die-hard DOS slave that it’s not worth pushing for a retrial. They should be smart enough to see that he would be found even guilty of even more appalling offenses. I think even the world’s smartest man is finally realizing this.

I agree they are going to find it very hard. Sometimes it is best to walk away in life. Even if they think KR was framed (which is clearly not true) – and even though some of what they learned helped them – why can’t they just pack it in a box in their head as part of the past and move on? They will not be happier devoting years to trying to exonerate KR or taking up some cause for supposed justice – they are the wrong poster boys for miscarriages of justice. They could work to earn money to pay to support real victims of miscarriages of justice but not KR.
The diehard dead-enders are so soaked in the Koolaid that probably nothing will shake their blind loyalty. The passage of time and new involvements in their lives typically will cause a few to slowly shift perspective, and either abandon their allegiance or finally outright repudiate it.
The Manson girls are a classic example – and in that case, innocent people were actually killed (more than just the well-known murders, and some of them after Manson’s arrest). A hard-core group including “Squeaky” Fromme (who may have a NXIVM couterpart in Nicki Clyne) and Sandra Good (Danielle Roberts?) remained loyal for decades after, if not for the rest of their lives, promoting Manson’s supposed ecological philosophy.
Remember also that in the case of NXIVM, they have belief in a grandiose conspiracy theory to reinforce their faith and explain away any inconvenient facts (the Manson diehards had a version of something similar in Helter Skelter). Supposedly sinister, all-powerful and timeless forces like the Illuminati are arrayed against Raniere and them, with the means to fabricate evidence and produce false witnesses. It is a tautology in which anything that doesn’t fit their worldview not only can be explained away, but actually becomes twisted into further anecdotal “evidence” of how devious and determined the plot against them is.
And then they’ll join another cult, be a slave, and give money for the cult.
Some may be likely to, but having watched and studied other groups and cults, it’s definitely the case that some will have learned their lesson after a bad experience like this. Vicente is an example of someone who cult-hopped from Ramtha to NXIVM, just as you say, but then seems to have finally wised up.
It’s a bit after 9:00 PM on the East Coast. I hope Frank is having a nice drink (or three) in the Big Apple. He deserves it.

Why do so many people hate Natalie? On The Vow, she was portrayed as someone who experienced a lot of torment and suffering at the hands of Keith and the crazy cult. She really suffered —is a victim. Why is she being demonized? Her documents helped take Keith down. AND she tried to warn Mark V, who ignored the warnings.
A lot of us are not in the know. It makes no sense.

Most of you were played against each other and vilified to keep others from asking questions. Quite literally, I don’t think any of you are completely trustworthy.
