Articles about sex offenders stoke fear and paranoia. There have been many target killings, beatings, arsons, and thefts to sex offenders by just looking them up on the registry. Yet, no one seems to care.
I am a registered sex offender. I had consensual sex with a 15-year-old girl when I was 21. If she was just two months older, yes two (a blink of the eye in time), I would have committed no crime. At the time, my crime was not a crime in Canada or anywhere in Europe, Mexico, or most of the developed world.
These registry laws are a waste of tax dollars and are a misplaced use of valuable law enforcement and government agency resources. Sex offender recidivism rate for a new sex offense is 0.8%.
Under the current system, many local registering agencies are challenged just keeping up with registration paperwork. It takes an hour or more to process each registrant, the majority of whom are low-risk offenders. As a result, law enforcement cannot monitor higher risk offenders more intensively due to the sheer numbers on the registry. Some of the consequences of lengthy and unnecessary registration requirements actually destabilize the lives of registrants and their families.
No one can doubt that child sexual abuse is traumatic and devastating. The question is not whether the state has an interest in preventing such harm, but whether current laws are effective in doing so. Megan’s law is a failure and is destroying families and their children’s lives and is costing taxpayers millions of dollars.

Not every registered person is a danger to society. Most registrants will never re-offend. But the public registry is not going to help them rehabilitate.
We just had a cold-blooded vigilante attack in Omaha this week, and the online vigilante groups have been emboldened to harass and threaten registered persons. Trying to paint every registered person like an uncontrollable pedophile only fuels the flames.
I’m sick of everyone making the same idiotic assumption that registered person equals pedophile. You’ll always find a few self-styled pedophiles in this world willing to play patsy to whatever whims the uneducated public may have, but not every registered person is going to lay down and let society continue to label us for an action taken years or decades ago.
Most sex crimes are committed by people not on any registry.
Also, there is a difference between a registrant who is a rapist and a registrant who was a teen who had sex with another teen. When the untrained person reads the registry, both people are listed as having “raped” someone, implying a violent act, even when no violence was involved.
Registered citizens must live somewhere. If anything, the registry should be abolished, and people should be using better tactics than relying on a corrupt government list to determine who is a danger to kids. Go here and start getting an education on this subject:

This is the kind of comment that makes the registry so dangerous to public safety.
People think these kind of men [child molesters] are on the registry, when over 95% of men [child molesters] are NOT on a registry. When looking at a registry thinking these men are dangerous, it is common for people to think those who are NOT on a registry will not be men like these.
It is those NOT on a registry you have to worry about more. You will trust them, they will be pillars of the community and nobody would ever suspect them. The registry gives you a false sense of security.
Some of the men are lying and some are not. When a registrant is confronted, there really is no benefit to telling the truth and because of such a wide net sex offenses cover it becomes plausible (at least in the offender’s mind) that what they did is not so bad and, therefore, the registry is not justified.
Or they are honest and the full weight of community condemnation comes upon them including violence, shame, and utter isolation. It is obvious why people will lie.
The fact is a registry takes the place of a comprehensive civil system whereby offenders evaluated are reevaluated periodically to see if they carry propensities to re-offend. Remember 1/3 of all offenders were minors themselves. Sexual experimentation should not lead to a lifetime on a registry. Evaluated offenders should be able to petition to be removed from a registry or have the parameters of the registry changed according to circumstances.
The registry is a PUNISHMENT. No person can be relieved of registry obligations for not being dangerous. It is applied ex-post facto. Its basis is a presumption of dangerousness. The result of a registry only has punitive outcomes, (loss of housing, membership in the community, and social isolation). The registry has no impact upon re-offense rates.
…. The Constitution doesn’t allow for the State to label people as dangerous and then to systematically use that label to isolate a person from the community without due process and outside of a sentence…..

Only sex offenders are against the registry. They want all restrictions removed so they can live near day care centers, elementary schools and playgrounds. They also do not want to be banned from children’s activities. Of course sex offenders cry that the registry doesn’t identify new offenders because most rape or molest in privacy of family or friend’s homes. How did they know this? Because the majority of sex offenders did exactly that – molested family members like cousins, nieces and nephews and/or the children of family friends. The registry needs to stay with even more publicity to let everyone know where these perverts are peeking out windows to watch children.
You couldn’t even find ONE case where proximity to so-called, vulnerable populations was a factor in offending. NOT ONE CASE. Residency restrictions are just a fear factor that destabilizes offenders by not allowing them to return to the security of a home, simply because it resides within an arbitrary line drawn by a legislature. Residency restrictions INCREASE offending and makes more victims. But we all know that punishment is the main purpose of a registry and a few victims to sacrifice is worth the cost. Isn’t that right? Val?

Marie, the registry is NOT supposed to be a punishment. It is applied outside of a court. It is supposed to be a civil law designed to
protect the community.
BUT you all use that registry in unlimited ways to isolate and discriminate, along with threaten and harass. the registry then clearly is NOT a civil law. It is punitive. A punishment. The oldest form of punishment mankind has: label and banish.
This is the main basis why I REFUSE the registry and will not go back on it.
It is axiomatic that no person has to follow laws of public safety that do exactly the opposite of public safety. In other words, taking my safety and/or security for a supposed public safety and/or security is a contradiction in terms.

I would like to hear more about your issues. There is something to be said about a man standing up for his rights and what he believes in. It’s interesting to say the least. Would you perhaps fall into the category of men who had sex with a younger female of the age of 16 or 17 and perhaps you were 18 or 19? I do find it ridiculous for men to be punished for these ages, unless of course it was an actual rape.
My issues are not important. The registry laws ARE important. My issues, if the State has any, are to be litigated in a court of law with DUE PROCESS protections. You all think I continue to be dangerous? Take it up with a judge. The registry however, has been applied outside of a court, outside of a sentence and without regard to actual or future dangerousness. That is patently illegal.
No legislature gets full control over populating a list of outcasts, without ANY regard to when a crime occurred (Adam Walsh Act forces registration for all sex crimes going back to 1952),or if a person is actually dangerous, Ex post facto laws are illegal. My sentence is OVER. There is no moral imperative to increase a sentence, ignore a sentence, or disregard a sentence passed by a court of law.
I have an inherent interest to NOT be considered dangerous to the community. The registry is not simply listing convictions that are public regardless. It is a list given to the public in unlimited ways that is overtly used to discriminate and isolate from the community, with harassment and violence directed at the offender. That is a punishment and DUE PROCESS protections need to apply.
Applying a registry is NOT a democratic exercise. I do not have to go to a legislature or convince the public that I am not dangerous and therefore should be excluded from a registry. That is an inherent JUDICIAL exercise; where evidence is presented, arguments are made and representation is given and fair decisions are made that can be appealed.
I got none of it!
On a registry I am unable to keep housing, healthy social life, and stable work. I left the registry because the next step was homelessness. That is a condition that is unsafe for me, and unsafe for the community. There are very few law abiding citizens among the homeless population for a reason Those reasons are housing, healthy social life, and stable work.
In other words, your registry has become dangerous to public safety – the exact opposite of a civil law.
The registry, as applied, is irrational, because it takes non-dangerous people and turns them to crime to survive, and it takes dangerous people and gives them no stability in their lives and more likely to act out in ways that got them into trouble to begin with.
I am not inherently against a registry or public notification I have been in prison. I know these guys that are profiled in the other article interviewing sex offenders. Some of those guys are real reckless asshole pedophiles. Some are not. Some want help. Some could care less. Most of the pathologies are apparent that everyone knows it, from prison staff, to prison psychologists to other inmates.. What is so disconcerting, is you all only have a registry for sex offenders, when every single day you all let out known violent and dangerous individuals without any parole, supervision or hope for integration into the community. They reek havoc on the community. I knew guys out just a week before putting a gun to someone’s head. Some did it just so they could go back to where they know and where they have security. PRISON.
I am not arguing the Constitution requires known dangerous people to walk around without regulations. What I am arguing is that you all can’t apply those regulations outside of a court of law. This is because of the inherent unfairness, ridiculous outcomes and unjust results that are so obvious, and a legislature is unable to foresee or legislate for. DUE PROCESS is a RIGHT, not a privilege. It is a DEMAND, not a request.
Either have some, or you all lose the right to regulate ME.

It is impossible to prove a negative. How can one prove a crime was not committed because information was used to stay away from a perv? Obviously the sexual pervs haven’t paid their debt to society and registering hasn’t been overturned by the Supreme Court, so at this point it is Constitutional to protect our young and innocent citizens. I see no dominoes falling down over this issue, the Constitution has changed one bit.
Don’t molest or rape children and you won’t be on a registry. Also, convicted sex offenders are vehemently against the “victim industry” – those who have been raped or molested and speak out about how they were abused. If victims advocate teaching children to prevent the crime from happening, putting responsibility on the victim instead of the perpetrator, they are attacked online by anti-registry “activists.”

There are over 200 offenses that could get a person registered in this country.
Many of them have NOTHING to do with touching children.
And in this era ” me too”, all it takes is an accusation, and people automatically assume “guilty”
It used to be that between 2%-5% of accusations were false, it’s now closer to 15% due to the ease of being believed, and the need for any type of attention that some accusers have.
I’m a CSA survivor, so I’m not without sympathy for real victims, but I’m also the loved one of someone who falsely accused, by one of those attention seekers.
And I know all too well what being on the registry can do to a family, particularly the children of a registrant.
Thankfully, that’s all behind us (for the most part) since he was able to get off the registry in our stare.
But I’m not gonna settle until the registry is reformed.
