Face Mask Acceptance Will Be by Degrees

A public policy writer, Dr. Ronald Fraser’s articles have appeared in the New York Times , the Washington Post and dozens of other newspapers and professional journals.

By Ronald Fraser Ph.D.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s recent Coronavirus-related executive order directs all New Yorkers, when in a public place and not maintaining appropriate social distancing, to cover their noses and mouths with a mask or cloth face-covering.

By imposing on New York citizens a radically new mode of public behavior—an innovative way for people to interact with one another—the governor has staged a grand, four-part drama running from April 17th to May 15th.

To get some idea how this state-wide drama might play out among adults as it draws-in 15 million New York actors, let’s consult Professor Everett Rogers’ popular diffusion of innovation model.  Once a new idea is introduced—the wearing of a face cover, for example—the model will help us track its adoption over time.

US Surgeon General Jerome M. Adams, M.D.

Early Adopters.  Rogers predicts the drama’s first act will involve about three million New Yorkers who will eagerly adopt the new idea.  Their acceptance of face coverings demonstrates a high degree of opinion leadership.  Early adopters are respected by their peers for their discrete use of a new idea.  Their adoption is seen as a subjective evaluation that decreases uncertainty other citizens may be experiencing.

Early Majority.  Next, enter the early majority, about four and a half million New Yorkers.  They adopt the new idea slightly ahead of late adopters.  Rogers writes, “The early majority’s unique position between the very early and relatively late to adopt makes them an important link in the diffusion process. They provide interconnectedness in the system’s network.”

Late Majority.  Another four and a half million New Yorkers—the more skeptical and cautious variety—adopt face coverings only in response to increasing pressure from others. They wait until the new idea has already been widely adopted and its utility has been established.

Laggards. As this drama draws to a close, the citizens most reluctant to don face coverings will trickle in. They are focused on the past and value how things have been done traditionally.  Their adoption occurs long after the new idea has been shown to be overwhelmingly worthwhile.

U.S. Health Officials Consider Face Masks for Americans to Slow ...

The use of face coverings in New York State is sure to test our social cohesion.  Unlike a law, the executive order—more akin to a polite request—does not stipulate how the face-covering decree will be enforced or the penalty for ignoring the directive.

Widespread compliance will more likely depend on a general willingness among citizens to trade off the inconvenience of wearing a face cover with concern for the well being of their neighbors.

As the wearing of face covers spreads and is adopted throughout the state, peer pressure will continue to build until finally even the laggards will relent and accept their assigned part in this unique civic drama.

Police start fining people for not wearing face masks in public ...
In Israel, police fine people for not wearing face masks in public.

Thanks for the informational piece – and a bit of sociology.

In the case of an infectious disease like this that hits certain demographics harder, it seems to me – and has been my observation – that those most at risk are also early adopters.

I also think it will help adoption, as more research demonstrates the protective value of using masks; and also as more effective masks become available, probably in part through improvement of home-made designs.

The bit about those who ‘are focused on the past and value how things have been done traditionally’ also seems to fit with what can be observed.

Exhaling the body’s waste gases into a fabric barrier which then redirects a portion of those gases back for rebreathing would seem to pose health risks via changes in metabolism compared to inhaling non waste gases.

I get woozy and panicky if my face is covered as I breathe–a challenge to be sure in the years I lived in 30 below winters. Those of course involved respiring of extremely fresh Arctic air. Not, say, heavily polluted city air.

Then there’s the CO2 thing. Before they discovered Trump Derangement Syndrome the left assured us that increasing carbon dioxide in our respiration would cause all manner of problems. But suddenly everyone rebreathing their exhaled CO2 is all the rage.

So pardon me if I conclude this whole Mandatory Masking thing is hogwash from a science standpoint and as per above a totalitarian power grab designed to drive citizens against one another, test the populace to see who the new local Stasi informants will be, and preparing for the 2024 election where Dems will openly run on a platform of nonsensical lies that, parroted, get the new Stasi members special chits and perks. By then they will be requiring people to live in human sized hamster balls so that no one misses respiring gases from either end…the better to disable fresh minded voting against UnipartyGlobo.

All those protective measures have been in use for half a century to a century or more, by large numbers of workers in a variety of fields, so their use is very well established. Cloth and surgical masks don’t trap significant amounts of Co2, and CO2 buildup in N-95 and similar type respirators is only significant enough to represent a possible problem for people who are sedentary or who have respiratory problems – others naturally compensate by increasing their respiratory rate to intake enough oxygen (just as at high altitudes, for example), as established by research.

The effectiveness of masks has been well established in studies, such as:

* Face Mask Use and Control of Respiratory Virus Transmission in Households

‘We estimated that, irrespective of the assumed value for the incubation period (1 or 2 days), the relative reduction in the daily risk of acquiring a respiratory infection associated with adherent mask use (P2 or surgical) was in the range of 60%–80%. ‘

While the exact effectiveness of public masking in reducing coronavirus transmission is unclear, we do now know that it is primarily transmitted through respiration, exactly what masks should help with. And in countries like Korea – which had its first COVID-19 case on the same day as the US, but has successfully minimized spread and economic disruption – which have kept down their transmission rates, it’s been one of the prominent protective measures.

Love this comment, DelAware! Yesterday, I was spotted with my mask down beneath the nostrils in an empty isle at a musky, poorly cooled store during a heat wave — just tryin’ to breath fresh air somehow — and after chewing me out, the valiant store clerk takes to the intercom to announce an emergency reminder to all shoppers to keep their noses in addition to their mouths covered at all times.

Stasi regs will soon set size and cloth density standards for face masks, no doubt. Next, we’ll all be in those robes Muslim women wear starting with hair coverings — just wait until the first hair salon spreads fatality.

A “polite request” in NYC? Fuggitaboutit. LOL

The robbers love the mask idea. Officer to robbery victim: Can you describe the robber? Victim: Yes, he was wearing a mask. LOL

What will really happen: New Yorkers will blow off the mask edict. Period. LOL

PEOPLE DON’T HOW THEY’LL PAY NEXT MONTH’S RENT OR MORTGAGE.
PEOPLE DON’T KNOW HOW THEY WILL FEED THEIR FAMILIES.
PEOPLE DON’T KNOW HOW THEY WILL FIND MILK FOR THEIR CHILDREN/

AMERICA IS ENTERING A NEW DEPRESSION CREATED BY THE COMMUNISTS AND MARXISTS IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY WITH HE

YES, FOLKS, NANCY PELOSI OWNS A VINEYARD AND COUNTRY ESTATE IN NAPA VALLEY.

Nancy Pelosi’s vineyard makes her fourth-richest Californian in Congress

The Pelosi estate on Zinfandel Lane, for example, is valued between $5,000,001 and $25 million, according to the records the congresswoman filed with the House clerk’s office for calendar year 2014. A description of the property posted on its architect’s website says it was inspired by Palladian villas and boasts a guesthouse and a “Z” shaped pool.

The estate is not just for show. The couple also collects between $5,001 and $15,000 in income from the sale of grapes grown at the vineyard.

Pelosi earns between $15,001 and $50,000 in rent from a different Napa Valley property that she and her husband own jointly. Her disclosure form listed its worth as between $500,001 and $1 million.

She and her husband also bring in as much as $50,000 in rent from a townhome near the Sugar Bowl Ski Resort in Norden valued between $1,000,001 and $5 million.

Most of Pelosi’s reported assets were listed as belonging to her husband, who has investments in Apple, Walt Disney Co., and Facebook. He has a stake in a few San Francisco office buildings as well as other commercial real estate around California, including one building that houses a Walgreens.

Frank Parlato is an investigative journalist.

His work has been cited in hundreds of news outlets, like The New York Times, The Daily Mail, VICE News, CBS News, Fox News, New York Post, New York Daily News, Oxygen, Rolling Stone, People Magazine, The Sun, The Times of London, CBS Inside Edition, among many others in all five continents.

His work to expose and take down NXIVM is featured in books like “Captive” by Catherine Oxenberg, “Scarred” by Sarah Edmonson, “The Program” by Toni Natalie, and “NXIVM. La Secta Que Sedujo al Poder en México” by Juan Alberto Vasquez.

Parlato has been prominently featured on HBO’s docuseries “The Vow” and was the lead investigator and coordinating producer for Investigation Discovery’s “The Lost Women of NXIVM.” Parlato was also credited in the Starz docuseries "Seduced" for saving 'slave' women from being branded and escaping the sex-slave cult known as DOS.

Additionally, Parlato’s coverage of the group OneTaste, starting in 2018, helped spark an FBI investigation, which led to indictments of two of its leaders in 2023.

Parlato appeared on the Nancy Grace Show, Beyond the Headlines with Gretchen Carlson, Dr. Oz, American Greed, Dateline NBC, and NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, where Parlato conducted the first-ever interview with Keith Raniere after his arrest. This was ironic, as many credit Parlato as one of the primary architects of his arrest and the cratering of the cult he founded.

Parlato is a consulting producer and appears in TNT's The Heiress and the Sex Cult, which premiered on May 22, 2022. Most recently, he consulted and appeared on Tubi's "Branded and Brainwashed: Inside NXIVM," which aired January, 2023.
