According to the SW survey, another 14 percent of respondents said they regularly consume Corona beer but would not, out of common decency, order Coronas in public.

There was also, and this is truly a sad commentary on the intelligence of the American people, some 16 percent of those surveyed said they were not sure whether the virus is related to Corona beer.

Corona beer isn’t making any changes to its advertising despite the name’s similarity to the deadly coronavirus. Constellation Brands said in a statement that its customers “understand there is no link between the virus and our business.”

Constellation is spending $40 million to launch its new Corona-branded hard seltzer. Part of the promotion includes an unhappily preplanned sponsored tweet that uses the phrase “coming ashore soon.”
Meantime, America waits to see the effects of how much of the coronavirus came ashore from China.
According to another survey conducted by YouGov, consumers’ intent to purchase Corona fell to its lowest level in two years. Constellation’s Newlands admitted that “misinformation” about the virus’ impact on Corona’s business is “extremely unfortunate.”
In fact, a spike in online searches for “corona beer virus” shows the level of misunderstanding the American public has.
Constellation Brands’ stock dropped 4% on Friday and 8% on Thursday, although the entire stock market has fallen sharply as fear grows about the spread of coronavirus. The number of cases have climbed to 83,577 globally Friday. Nearly 3,000 people have died from the virus.
Meantime, it is not known how Budweiser, Coors and Miller officials feel about the choice of the name that the World Health Organization chose to bestow on the virus.
According to an unconfirmed Budweiser source, “While we all regret deeply the spread of this yellow scourge, the Corona beer virus, we want to assure the beer drinking public that Budweiser is safe to drink and will never turn yellow in the bottle.”
Of course, the corona virus is no laughing matter, especially to those who are afflicted, the relatives of the ailing and the deceased, the potential victims of the virus and the stockholders of Constellation Brands.
Please study up on the virus and take all precautions. But be advised that not drinking Corona beer is not one of them.
Following up on the story, it looks like it may have been a bit of fake news – there’s even another media claim of 38% rather than 16%, but it appears to be based on a misleading poll performed and then publicized by the PR agency 5WPR (see next for hints of their motive), and actually only about 4% of people aren’t drinking Corona because of (irrational) fear of the virus – the rest would probably just not ever drink it at all. Media outlets on both sides of the ideological spectrum fell for it; it was actually reporters at the Huffington Post and The Atlantic who led the fact-checking:

I find it fascinating when there are multiple, mutually contradictory conspiracy theories – the raw probability of any one of them being true drops below 50%, and yet their proponents seem to believe in the unlikely variations as fervently as flat-earthers.
Apparently one of the latest variants is that the Chinese stole the coronavirus from a Canadian lab – apparently with no good explanation for why the Canadians were cooking up such a thing.
And of course some of the QAnons believe that the virus is not just being exploited by the deep state, but was actually cooked up by those nefarious forces who “planned” its release – though I don’t think that explains why it showed up in China first.
Finally, a conspiracy theory that I made up off the top of my head while commenting last week, is indeed out in the wild: that the coronavirus is actually a bio-weapon engineered by the CIA as a way to wage war on China – though with no explanation of why it was then haplessly allowed to spread in the US.

Interesting about Boston. Given what happened in Washington State, it wouldn’t be surprising to find that the virus had spread undetected in quite a few locations. I have no problem with the Mexican people. They’re God-fearing Christian folk that are Catholics.
Culturally, they’re actually very conservative; there are areas of Mexico where women, if they’re not wearing skirts, are frowned upon. Believe it or not.

I lived in Spain during the end of the Franco era, when widows were still expected to wear black in public – and chaperone their granddaughters’ dates. There are Latin American countries that are my choice to visit or live in over Mexico, generally the ones with nicer modern city life – and amazing nightlife, I don’t know how such large portions of the population manage to stay out past midnight even on weeknights – but I know when you get out into the countryside all bets are off about what you’ll find, including what language is spoken.

I had seen the headline about Corona sales dropping recently, but I assumed it was for subconscious reasons…. that maybe associated the name with the virus, and subconsciously chose a different brand.
But these surveys tell a different story, or are some people just messing with the survey questions?…. because it’s hard to believe anyone could be that dumb, even a Q-Anon believer. Lol.
Subconscious reasons are almost certainly part of it, as well. It’s an unsettling reminder of just how prone we can be to influences like that. And it’s some of that same sort of phenomenon, that Raniere exploited with his use of suggestive and hypnotic techniques.

Create an illness that has overlapping symptoms with the common cold and flu in the middle of cold and flu season. Anyone with a cough or a runny nose will think they’re going to die. This fear is exactly what they want.

Following up on the story, it looks like it may have been a bit of fake news – there’s even another media claim of 38% rather than 16%, but it appears to be based on a misleading poll performed and then publicized by the PR agency 5WPR (see next for hints of their motive), and actually only about 4% of people aren’t drinking Corona because of (irrational) fear of the virus – the rest would probably just not ever drink it at all. Media outlets on both sides of the ideological spectrum fell for it; it was actually reporters at the Huffington Post and The Atlantic who led the fact-checking:

I find it fascinating when there are multiple, mutually contradictory conspiracy theories – the raw probability of any one of them being true drops below 50%, and yet their proponents seem to believe in the unlikely variations as fervently as flat-earthers.
Apparently one of the latest variants is that the Chinese stole the coronavirus from a Canadian lab – apparently with no good explanation for why the Canadians were cooking up such a thing.
And of course some of the QAnons believe that the virus is not just being exploited by the deep state, but was actually cooked up by those nefarious forces who “planned” its release – though I don’t think that explains why it showed up in China first.
Finally, a conspiracy theory that I made up off the top of my head while commenting last week, is indeed out in the wild: that the coronavirus is actually a bio-weapon engineered by the CIA as a way to wage war on China – though with no explanation of why it was then haplessly allowed to spread in the US.

I lived in Spain during the end of the Franco era, when widows were still expected to wear black in public – and chaperone their granddaughters’ dates. The AP noted Wednesday that both Mike Bloomberg and Joe Biden are flat out wrong in claims that Trump cut resources for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The fact check report states:
Democratic presidential contenders are describing the federal infectious-disease bureaucracy as rudderless and ill-prepared for the coronavirus threat because of budget cuts and ham-handed leadership by President Donald Trump. That’s a distorted picture. For starters, Trump hasn’t succeeded in cutting the budget.
He’s proposed cuts but Congress ignored him and increased financing instead. The National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention aren’t suffering from budget cuts that never took effect.

For what it’s worth: just for once, I actually take a conspiracy source at face value.
