Scott Johnson: Amway Compared to NXIVM – Which MLM Caused the Most Harm?

In this post, Scott Johnson replies to a commenter, on Amway and how it compares with another MLM scheme, the notorious sex cult Nxivm. The commenter’s remarks are in bold. Johnson’s replies follow.

By Scott Johnson

Amway is an MLM scheme that peddles expensive soap by promising that if the buyer recruits new salespeople. one can ultimately become a millionaire.

WRONG. The recruits are NOT salespeople, they are recruiters.

Here’s a recent video that records how Amway cheats. I was taught the same thing over two decades ago, when I was a recruiter for Amway:

https://youtu.be/bYruRwYWgtU?t=1140

The mantra from my upline was “buy from yourself” [i.e. Amway – since you get a bonus/rebate, the term “yourself” is used].

I was told to teach others to do the same. It’s pure recruitment, with little to no retail sales to non-distributors. This is what makes MLMs illegal pyramids.

Amway is not really selling soap. —

That’s right, but not for the reason you are offering.

Amway is selling a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Amway sells an illegal pyramid.

Over the years there have been numerous other MLM schemes like Shaklee that make the same outrageous promises.

The promises aren’t really the issue. The illegal pyramid is the issue.

The products are overpriced, which makes them almost impossible to sell to customers and results in Amway being an illegal pyramid.

Image result for amway pyramid chart

MLMs sprout like mushrooms on manure piles.

Yes, they do. The answer is educating others, including your friends, neighbors, relatives, coworkers, the government, the media, etc.

The fact that Keith Alan Raniere started out in an MLM shows that Raniere is basically a stupid con artist.

No, it doesn’t. Most people who join MLMs believe they are joining a legitimate business model. They are wrong, but that does NOT make them stupid con artists. Raniere used the techniques he learned in Amway to start Consumers’ Buyline and NXIVM.

The only people dumber than Keith Raniere are the stupid gangsters who followed him.

Many of the people who followed Raniere were more influenced by his downline edifying him than Raniere himself. It’s how it works in MLM, and Raniere learned it well. Evil, yes. Stupid, no.

But the MLM scheme is the least egregious part of the Keith Raniere story.

MLM may be the least egregious part of Raniere’s story, but it is what enabled everything else.

Raniere is a rapist, a slave master, a sex trafficker, a child molester, a kidnapper and a possible murderer.

Yes, all enabled by the MLM techniques he learned while in Amway.

To some degree I doubt Scott Johnson’s declared rejection of Amway.

Why do you doubt? I’ve spent at least some time every single day since 2005 educating people about Amway and other MLM scams.

I endured a lawsuit from Amway, got a favorable settlement, and continued to educate people. The lawsuit didn’t slow me down, it energized me more. This lawsuit was separate from the Pokorny class action lawsuit against Amway, and the settlement can be found on my websites.

A few months ago Scott told me that I lacked the “self-confidence” to be a successful Amway salesman.

No, I said many people don’t join Amway and other MLM scams because they lack self-confidence, NOT because they realize that the MLM is a scam.

Image result for amway pyramid chart

To be brutally honest the Amway system is designed to fail for 99.99% of all Amway salesmen.

This is true, yet most people don’t know WHY it is true. It has much more to do with the ATS (Amway Tool Scam) than the lack of retail sales.

Here is a partial list of MLM schemes. List of multi-level marketing companies
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_multi-level_marketing_companies —

That is a very partial list, there are literally hundreds of them in the U.S., and thousands around the world.

The government can NOT protect you from every con artist.

But I expect them to use MY tax dollars to do their assigned job, regulate “unfair and deceptive” business practices.

The government can NOT babysit you.

I’m not advocating the government babysit anybody, but they need to do their job.

You must educate and protect yourselves. You must follow the Rule of Caveat Emptor. (Let the Buyer Beware.)

I advocate that, but the government should still do its job.  For my part, I don’t lecture anybody. I educate them. Part of that education is for them to educate others.

Most people who join Amway have family and friends who have warned them it a scam. —

The education must come BEFORE they are approached, after they are approached is often too late. The hook has been set. MLM scams tell the prospects “people will be against them joining,” so when it happens, it only increases the MLM’s credibility with the prospect.

What I take issue with is when you attempt to try to draw the inference that Amway and NXIVM are the same thing.

I have never said Amway and NXIVM are the same thing. In fact, I’ve said, ironically, that NXIVM is the ONLY MLM I’ve come across that appears to be legitimate from the perspective of lots of retail sales to customers. What I’ve said is they use the same techniques, NOT that they are the same thing.

Not everyone who joined NXIVM was in the Raniere sex club, maybe 10% were.

Not everyone who joins Amway and other MLM scams loses much time or money, because they don’t do much other than pay for some overpriced products, just like most people who take a NXIVM course or two don’t suffer nearly as much as those who joined the Raniere sex club. They just paid a few thousand dollars for overpriced “training.”

Image result for amway pyramid chart

Amway cannot be compared to such an abusive criminal organization.

Amway can easily compare to such an abusive criminal organization. Amway is still running free, suing people left and right.

Nxivm members like myself suffered emotional, legal and financial abuse from the Nxivm inner circle. Nancy and Lauren Salzman, Clare and Sara Bronfman, Pam Cafritz, Barbara Jeske, Loreta Garza, Kristen Keeffe and the rest of Raniere’s goons.

Poor little victim. I lost a LOT of time and money and make Amway and other MLM scams suffer my wrath. I have an idea for you: GROW UP AND ACT LIKE AN ADULT. All of those goons you named are either dead, about to be sentenced to prison, or have virtually disappeared, probably never to be seen again. What exactly are you afraid of?

Scott, you want us to believe your “Me Too” situation, but Amway has been around for decades. If it was running a criminal RICO organization, they would have been shut down by now.

Bernie Madoff, Enron, Vemma, Herbalife, Advocare, Neora, etc., were around for many years before they were brought to justice.

Amway is a huge multi-national company making billions of dollars a year.  Amway has been very visible. NXIVM was very well hidden until it started to get bad press.

Amway is not as visible as you think. You are thinking only about yourself, not the billions of people who have never even heard of Amway. The fact that it is big only makes it a larger scam than NXIVM.

NXIVM was in three countries and had less than 2,500 members. How much they made vs how much rich students gave them is unknown. They most likely never made close to a billion.

I agree, Amway and other MLM scams are a much larger problem from this perspective.

Amway is set up so most people don’t get rich, I will agree. So is Microsoft, Amazon, Ford, Southwest Airlines, and any other major organization. Not everyone can be at the top of a company.

Amway is different, It is actually set up so most people lose money. All of the companies you listed result in all of the people making money, some more than others. So they are not remotely comparable.

Image result for amway pyramid chart
With 15 levels, you run out of people on earth.

MLMs will continue as long as people buy into them. Just like Churches will keep their doors open as long as people come. Cults will happen because people want to follow someone they believe has a mission or an idea they want to follow.

MLMs will continue as long as people (including governments, the media, and individuals) aren’t educated.

We cannot make the world a perfect and safe place for everyone. We can warn and educate. It’s up to them to listen.

That doesn’t mean massive scams like Amway should not be shut down. Warning and educating takes effort.

Amway is and will never be a dangerous cult like NXIVM.

MLMs have caused divorces, bankruptcies, huge legal costs, ruined relationships, massive debt, and even sometimes statutory rapes, murders, assaults, – and on a much larger scale than Raniere ever dreamed of.

This 31 minute video by John Oliver sums up the insanity of MLMs far better than I can do and with humor.

I agree, that’s why I reference it when I educate people. However, even that video does not address the ATS, which is the much larger problem with many MLM scams.

The corporate world cannot be denied that like the pyramid example how many people who work for a company in America can have an actual chance of making as much as the CEO? Yet there are so many employees at the bottom.
The earlier comment in your story stated because people have little professional experience to sell makes Amway an illegal business..that can easily be said about any company that sells door to door.
People go to college and go into 100s of thousands of dollars in debt to have to pay back and often (not always) never makes enough money in x # years out of college to make that $ back.
If someone is able to join in a private franchising corporation and makes extra money that benefits them even though many won’t should not be looked down upon. A cup of coffee is pennies to make but is sold to the public for 100s% markup yet people pay for it. This is no different than someone selling something to another that many may feel marked up too much.
How many try out for the Olympics and never make it yet thru the journey become better by it. Would this still not apply also?
Promising that someone will be rich in a short time in any business without pointing out A LOT of work is in store for it should not be advised. Whether that’s selling vacuum cleaners, insurance or soap or any other product or service

This is the typical pro-MLM tripe that is offered up as sorry excuses.

The issue of an illegal pyramid has NOTHING to do with a geometric shape or how most organizations are arranged. The issue is that illegal pyramids have little to no retail sales. If most of the sales of a typical non-MLM were to the employees, that would be an illegal pyramid as well.

Another fallacy comparing illegal pyramid MLMs to traditional companies is that not everyone can become the CEO. Duh. The real issue is that everybody in a corporation makes money, some more than others, whereas in MLM scams almost everyone loses money, especially when overhead costs, whether the costs are legitimate or feeding into a tool scam are considered.

I never said that “people have little professional experience to sell makes Amway an illegal business.” The issue has nothing to do with experience, it has everything to do with whether retail sales to non-distributors are being made.

The college costs money is also a red herring. If you major in a weak major and can’t make much money when you graduate doesn’t suddenly make illegal pyramids legal. These two topics have NOTHING to do with each other.

The high markup of products is another weak attempt at misdirecting the discussion. It doesn’t matter what the markup is, if you don’t make retail sales to non-distributors, the MLM is an illegal pyramid. Period.

The sports/Olympic analogy also has NOTHING to do with lack of retail sales in an MLM scam. NOTHING.

I bought some Amway products from my mom when she was in it. I like the products and didn’t think they were over-priced because they were very concentrated.

I wasn’t interested in the business part as I had a good job and was super busy in my community and with my hobbies.

I still have the pots and pans I bought from her through Amway. They were expensive but killer good and as a matter of fact, after 25 years they are as good as new.

I still have a couple of spray bottles from Amway that work perfectly after 25 years. I cannot get any other spray bottles that work for more than a year before they break.

Scott. if you have any new Amway spray bottles left over in your garage I might buy from you?

I’m not into the Amway business but if others are happy with being involved, I say live and let live.

My mom didn’t become rich. She enjoyed her small little business. It gave her something to do and her neighbors and family bought some products from her. She also did Avon and I used to buy some of their stuff from her.

She was never on the road to what is walk-away residual income. I went to an upline meeting to please her but she knew I was not going to join.

Her garage was never full of products because she was never trying to “get to the next level’. She ordered what her and her husband wanted and what others wanted. She was never pushy about it.

I think she liked the social aspect of helping her friends and family out and she could make a little spending money.

My stepfather didn’t mind as it was her thing and she didn’t go hog wild on it. She was smart and stayed in her lane of possibility.

Maybe with her high school diploma, she was street smart and knew her what her limitations were as many people do.

You say you have three PhD’s Scott. Maybe your big brain got in the way of knowing how much to bite off at a time. Your dreams in Amway sound like they were too big for your abilities.

Now, you sound bitter and want to shut down what some people are perfectly happy with.

Your mom is a rare exception. A rare exception doesn’t negate the massive scam going on. I never said I had three PhDs. I said I’ve had three people with PhDs on my radio/podcast show. The big dreams are what is promoted, I didn’t invent the scam. I’m not bitter, I don’t want others being ripped off as I and 10s of millions of others have been ripped off.

Wow, this whole article is f’ing retarded. There is a difference between MLM and Pyramid.

The entire purpose of a pyramid scheme is to get your money and then use you to recruit other suckers (ahem – distributors). The entire purpose of MLM is to move product.

For someone who supposedly did research, you didnt research well enough. Multilevel Marketing is becoming more and more how things are going to be sold and done, just like affiliate marketing.

Get your shit and facts straight before making a stupid and worthless post. Maybe if you were to try something different you may understand and like it but making posts like this just shows your too damned chicken to get out of the norm and move forward.

There are often hundreds of people in depth, not just fifteen. There are very few making money compared to those being scammed. If your efforts don’t include retail sales to non-distributors, then you’re in an illegal pyramid. Simple as that. You can keep changing the subject all you want, it won’t work. LOL

I object to all of the “pyramid” add-ons in the above story. That is NOT how illegal pyramids work. The FTC tried that flawed “theory” with Ger-Ro-Mar in 1975 and got their a$$ handed to them by the judge, just search for “Ger” here: https://stoptheamwaytoolscam.wordpress.com/s-the-other-critics-a-competent-critics-critical-critic-critique/ The FTC tried the same thing again in the 1979 Amway case, and another judge rejected them again. The FTC hasn’t tried it again to the best of my knowledge, because it is a flawed theory that has no basis in fact. There are instances of “micro-saturation” in very localized area, such as a small town but not overall general saturation, and the advent of the internet with the ability to easily extend a business into another town, state, and even country, has virtually elimated this issue.

The problem with illegal pyramids is not that they eventually saturate (Amway has been around for 60 years, when is it supposed to saturate?), it’s that they DON’T saturate, they just keep churning out people who lost money only to find new people who lose money. Also, the most significant part of Amway’s scam isn’t even mentioned, the ATS (Amway Tool Scam).

When I was growing up my family taught me that short of being born a Rockefeller, there is no easy way to become rich.
Wealth comes from studying hard, working hard, living frugally.
Wealth does not come from gambling, speculation or living for today.

My grandfather was careful with money because he lost the family farm during the Great Depression.
My grandfather did not constantly whine and bellyache about his misfortune.
He went to work and rebuilt his life with the understanding that THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES IN LIFE.
Scott Johnson, grow up and quit the whining and bellyaching.
AND QUIT THE GET RICH QUICK SCHEMES LIKE AMWAY AND NXIVM.

I saw the picture of the bloated ignorant lazy indolent asinine Keith Raniere reading a book about winning at gambling.

I believe that is how most Amway salespeople, including Scott Johnson, think.
Life will be a bed of roses and people will willingly pay an inflated price for ordinary products with the promise of a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
Everyone else exists to benefit and enrich Keith Raniere, Scott Johnson and the Amway sales force.
And that is how NXIVM and Executive Success operated.
Everyone else exists to benefit and enrich the leaders of the NXIVM criminal gang.

The people in Amway and NXIVM are peas in a pod.
And they all make me want to puke my guts up.

Shadowstate,

“Many – but not all – of the points Scott puts up come from me.”-Shadow State

My dear Shadow, Scott cuts & pastes everything from you. Who did Scott get the idea to post the link to John Oliver MLM special? It’s a rhetorical question.

LMAO!!!!!

At the very least, Scott should cite your work in a footnote.

I don’t mind if Scott cuts and pastes or links to the excellent John Oliver video about MLMs.
I do object if he claims that I don’t do enough to expose Amway.
Most people figure out that Amway is a scam right away.
People don’t have to be harangued about it by a disgruntled Amway salesman who thinks he was cheated.
And for all of the bad things Amway does, it hardly compares to what former Amway salesman Keith Raniere did at NXIVM.

Shadowstate,

Scott should cite your work. It’s only fair. Not joking.

I have not been harangued in while. Nice usage.

I’ve been referring to the Oliver video for a much longer time than Mr. Shadow, and have made numerous comments in the video, so you and Mr. Shadow should be thanking me. You’re welcome.

I don’t mind if Scott cuts and pastes or links to the excellent John Oliver video about MLMs. — I couldn’t care less what you prefer. While the Oliver video is good, it completely misses the largest problem when it comes to Amway and many other MLM scams, the tool scam.

I do object if he claims that I don’t do enough to expose Amway. — That’s because you’re stupid and don’t follow instructions.

Most people figure out that Amway is a scam right away. — No, they don’t figure that out, most people are too scared to join, because they don’t have enough self confidence. However, the internets has helped more people back up that fear by checking it out and finding out that MLMs are scams, and that’s why they’re shrinking.

People don’t have to be harangued about it by a disgruntled Amway salesman who thinks he was cheated. — People should be grateful that I’m educating them, and more people should be doing the same thing.

And for all of the bad things Amway does, it hardly compares to what former Amway salesman Keith Raniere did at NXIVM. — MLM scams have done FAR more damage than Raniere ever dreamed of doing at NXIVM.

After so long of witnessing his act, I’m surprised you give Scott a second thought for any reason other than comic relief.

That was stupid. All I’m doing with Amway and other MLM scams that Frank has done with NXIVM – bring attention on them which causes them to collapse, thus preventing people from being abused. Good thing your name is Nutjob, it’s VERY appropriate. LOL

Most people are scared away from Amway when they find out they have to buy a 41 dollar box of laundry detergent.
Texas had better beef up its school Math program.

Scott Johnson

I thought it was $50 for a box of laundry detergent. Didn’t you get the note that hardly anybody pays even $41 for a box of laundry detergent? Most people don’t find out the prices until they have been thoroughly indoctrinated in the “dream.” You’re an idiot, but that’s what we should expect from the corrupt, crime-ridden, heavily taxed, bankrupt, uneducated state of Illinois. LOL

Amway is well-known for their concentrated products. Except by you, obviously. LOL You don’t compare weights, you compare the number of washing machine loads for an apples to apples comparison. Try again, RETARD! LOL

No need to apologize. I know you’re sorry. You were born sorry (i.e., totally lacking in any positive attribute). LOL

You’re comparison is just about price not cost. If you were to actually compare size of the load of laundry and how many loads the box does you’d discover that you pay less per load of laundry. In addition the quality is the best.

Don’t go away mad Bubbles. Just go away.

By now you should realize that no one takes you seriously because you blame everything on ScamWay.

Global warming – blame it on Amway. Lack of a job – must be Amway’s fault. Having problems with Mr. Limpy – all due to Amway.

Nobody gives a flying wet fuck about you or ScamWay. So look, Mr. Monkey balls. Fk off

And no, nobody wants to be on your internet Radio show with one listener, you.

By now you should realize that no one takes you seriously because you blame everything on ScamWay. — Lots of people take me seriously, but stupid people like you don’t. I don’t blame everything on Amway and other MLM scams, that’s ridiculous. LOL

About the Author

Frank Parlato is an investigative journalist.

His work has been cited in hundreds of news outlets, like The New York Times, The Daily Mail, VICE News, CBS News, Fox News, New York Post, New York Daily News, Oxygen, Rolling Stone, People Magazine, The Sun, The Times of London, CBS Inside Edition, among many others in all five continents.

His work to expose and take down NXIVM is featured in books like “Captive” by Catherine Oxenberg, “Scarred” by Sarah Edmonson, “The Program” by Toni Natalie, and “NXIVM. La Secta Que Sedujo al Poder en México” by Juan Alberto Vasquez.

Parlato has been prominently featured on HBO’s docuseries “The Vow” and was the lead investigator and coordinating producer for Investigation Discovery’s “The Lost Women of NXIVM.” Parlato was also credited in the Starz docuseries "Seduced" for saving 'slave' women from being branded and escaping the sex-slave cult known as DOS.

Additionally, Parlato’s coverage of the group OneTaste, starting in 2018, helped spark an FBI investigation, which led to indictments of two of its leaders in 2023.

Parlato appeared on the Nancy Grace Show, Beyond the Headlines with Gretchen Carlson, Dr. Oz, American Greed, Dateline NBC, and NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, where Parlato conducted the first-ever interview with Keith Raniere after his arrest. This was ironic, as many credit Parlato as one of the primary architects of his arrest and the cratering of the cult he founded.

Parlato is a consulting producer and appears in TNT's The Heiress and the Sex Cult, which premiered on May 22, 2022. Most recently, he consulted and appeared on Tubi's "Branded and Brainwashed: Inside NXIVM," which aired January, 2023.
