I believe Keith Raniere would not be in prison today if he had not made any one of three mistakes.
It’s funny too because he claimed to be one of the top three problem solvers in the world.
He might have gone on scamming people – having sex with a harem of women – lying about his accomplishments – cheating people out of their life savings- doing identity fraud – bulk cash smuggling – running a racketeering enterprise under the guise of a life coaching group – confining women in rooms – having group blow jobs – semi-starving women – keeping them sleep deprived – promising women to have avatar babies then making them have abortions – and fucking with all of their heads – but for three mistakes.
It was May 2017 when Catherine Oxenberg called and told me her daughter was:
- Branded
- On her pubic region
- With Raniere’s initials.
After years of trying to get this scoundrel for all kinds of crimes, I knew this would be his undoing.
Not that it was illegal. It’s not illegal to brand a woman, on her pubic region, with somebody’s initials, if she consents.
But it shocks the conscience. It speaks to moral rot and wickedness.
Branding was easier to use to explain Raniere’s wickedness than all his financial crimes, the supposed brainwashing, cult machinations, sex perv elements, denying his own son, losing tens of millions of others’ money in commodity trades, or going after enemies with perjury – all put together.
When I reported the news on Frank Report, the cult cratered. Hundreds left. When the New York Times reported the branding, the whole world got interested. So did the DOJ. The media onslaught was sparked by the three:
- branding of women
- on the pubic region
- with his initials.
It was the shocking concept that this rascal bastard:

- on their pubic region
- with his initials
that turned the jury against him from that moment in the opening arguments when they heard about it.
He was done. Still, it took all three. Had he skipped one, he might be free today.
If he had chosen not to brand, but tattoo women on their pubic region, nobody would have cared. It’s a tattoo. It’s not terribly painful. It is not necessarily permanent. If women want to get stupid tattoos with their leader’s initials, what’s the big deal?
A cult that tattoos women – even if they call themselves slaves and masters – would not have made it to the front page of the New York Times. Indeed the Times’ headline was Inside a Secretive Group Where Women Are Branded
I submit if the story was “Inside a Secretive Group Where Women Are Tattooed”, it would not be very shocking.
Still, I think he could have gotten away with branding, if it was not on the pubic region.
If he had branded women on the ass with his initials, I think people would have laughed and called the women silly. If he branded them on the shoulder or ankle, people would have said it’s just a kooky group.
Even if they did give collateral, it’s just a brand on the shoulder.
And, besides, collateral was given voluntarily. The first collateral was given to find out about DOS. No one had to join after they learned about DOS. The second collateral was again given voluntarily in order to join DOS.
If the brand had been elsewhere – not on the pubic region which is vulnerable and makes people squeamish just to think about being branded there – most people would have blamed the stupid women who could have stopped after they gave their first collateral.
The branding could have been almost anywhere else – except perhaps the breasts or the face – and nobody would care.
A tattoo on the pubic region – or a brand somewhere else – would not be shocking and without shock, there is no outrage. Without outrage, there would be no media; without media, there would be no prosecution. [The DOJ admitted they first learned about the branding and Raniere, from the Times story.]
Still, I think, Raniere could have gotten away with branding on the pubic region, if he had not used his initials.
If the brand was the four elements or some cosmic symbol, Raniere would have plausible deniability. And the outrage would have been a lot less. People would think, “OK, crazy women got themselves branded with some mystic symbol that bonds/unites them for a sorority. What harm? The women consented. So what if it’s a master-slave group, maybe they’re just kinky?”
But the fact that it was his initials – that he marked women like cattle – as his slaves – with his brand – his initials – on the pubic region – that caused outrage. It also killed the notion that it was a sorority.
It was the combination of all three: branding women, on their pubic regions, with his initials, that landed him in prison.
Ah Raniere, if only he was a little smarter, he’d still be in business today.

Re Shadowstate rebuttal to my comments regarding his deep and dark obsession with Allison Mack
Shadowstate clearly has an obsession with the actress Allison Mack. Many readers besides myself have acknowledged Shadowstate’s obsession with the former Smallville actress.
I attempted to illuminate this fact to Shadowstate so he realizes he has a problem. I asked Shadow a few questions and tried to highlight his obsession regarding Allison Mack in a diplomatic and polite way. Instead of contemplating my words Shadowstate went on the attack.
Shadowstate did not answer any of the questions that I asked of him. Instead Shadowstate went into a rambling defensive tirade of deflection, ridiculous non-sequiturs, childish arguments, and denial ad nauseam.
Here are some examples of Shadowstate’s defensive deflections and childish arguments:
The first defensive act, Shadowstate went into a three paragraph critique of my use of just 2 emojis; explaining how no real educated adult uses emojis from his generation. Shadowstate went on to use 12 emojis. Shadowstate acted as child caught in a lie.
Another example I used the word “groovy” to relate to our 60+ old friend, Shadow. Shadowstate then asked “Are you living in 1966 or did you watch too many Austin Powers movies?”, Shadowstate. Shadowstate instead of answering any of the serious questions I had for him instead harped on a solitary word “groovy” and 2 emojis.
Shadowstate then for reasons only he understands brought up Donald Trump; as some kind of psychological defensive non- sequitur in a poor attempt to deflect from my questions. I voted for Trump and Shadowstate, knowing this fact, tried to twist it poorly in an oddly strange way.
Shadowstate’s other ridiculous non sequitur was harping on the religion of SultanOfSix. I mentioned to Shadow how he shares a similar obsession with SultanOfSix; Shadow being in a state of denial about his own obsession then tried to deflect to Sultanofsix’s religion, Islam. Basically Shadowstate’s attack on Islam is yet another non sequitur. Shadowstate has mentioned Jewish global conspiracies before so his bashing Islam to deflect from his own insanity and dark obsession is not surprising. I asked no questions regarding Islam.
Sadly, Shadowstate1958 is in deep phycological denial as to his obsession. Shadowstate defended himself by acting like a child. Shadowstate is unable to face reality the way an adult man should be able to.
Clearly Shadowstate’s defensive reaction is only because deep down inside he knows his obsession with Allison Mack is very wrong and not normal.
Tragically Shadowstate may be starting to suffer from Cognitive dissonance.

I’m absolutely disgusted and appalled at these comments. How can these people judge what these women (and men) endured in NXIVM? They WERE and ARE victims. My previous comment about Sarah not being courageous was not a dig at her. It was a dig at describing her as courageous which I don’t find to be true. I don’t see how anonymously posting on forums is remotely comparable. No one who does so has been described as courageous by others, and they would look like an idiot if they themselves claimed they were courageous.

Methinks you don’t know what the definition of courage is. What courage is there to show a scar that you received in a secret ceremony to a major media publication? Is she out there dodging bullets or bombs from terrorists like a soldier often has to? How about chasing or engaging in shootouts with hardened criminals as a police officer? Maybe running into burning buildings or fighting massive wildfires like a fireman? Overcoming your embarrassment of being fooled to pull your jeans below your belt line to the media and show its audience that you got branded near your pubic area is not courage. Is this how low the standard line has fallen for courage? Give me a break.
I have not a dot of sympathy for the negative end result NXIVM – they deserve every bit of it – but what appears to me to be little more than opportunistic and self-interested behavior from her after the fact of spending over a decade in this organization gives credence as to why she was taken in by NXIVM for so long.

Escape? LOL. She was a high ranking member of the organization when she left, was in it for 12 years, and she flew back and forth to Albany on a consistent basis. No one was holding her against her will.

Frank, I agree with you but I also think the additional ingredient was Catherine Oxenberg’s celebrity name attached to one of the young women sporting a brand. If KAR hadn’t fallen victim to his fatal flaw of arrogance and kept pushing I agree he could still be lying in bed all day, eating pizza and texting with one of the many women at his beck and call.
I also agree with Scott that the blackmail element added the necessary push for DOJ to investigate.
I hope Frank’s stories concerning the Bronfman’s gets picked up and further charges are laid against them. The coffers need filling so hopefully the lure of fines will get them charged.

Yes and it seems from the “Look at This” post above that Ms. Edmondson seems intent on getting as much mileage out of that photo and that brand as possible. The brand has become her brand so to speak, and she will be remembered more for that brand than any piece of acting she does on the oh so hallowed Hallmark Channel.
Definitely a good career move, as Ms. Edmondson was nearing the end of her shelf life as an actress, as it would not appear that she has the talents or appeal of a Vanessa Redgrave, Meryl Streep, Judy Dench or Helen Mirren (admittedly, not many do). Also a good career move in that her husband, maybe the second stupidest man to ever graduate Harvard (right behind Emi Salinas, dancing in his green shirt to please his Vanguard), probably can not be expected to keep a roof over her head and tea in her mug.
But Anthony Ames aka Nippy aka Mr Sarah Edmondson is a MANLY MAN. Upon finding out that his wife had been branded like a piece of cattle, he sent an ANGRY email to Nancy Salzman. I guess beating the stinking shit out of the man ultimately responsible for branding his wife would have been an “ethical breach”, not to mention the fact that Raniere was the goose providing the golden eggs. I guess this is why Mr. and Mrs Edmondson did not report the branding of scores of women immediately after the fact?
Bottom line: even as an alleged victim, Ms. Edmondson continues to profit (monetarily or in terms of keeping herself relevant) from NXIVM. Her brand should be a constant reminder of her own stupidity and gullibility, and if Nippy is still allowed to travel in that territory he should be reminded of his failure to protect his wife each time he sees the mark of the Vanguard.

I agree with the conclusion. His celebrities helped built the cult. And they helped draw the attention that cratered it.
But Raniere was going to eventually self destruct. That’s what he was born to do. If branding women and turning them into his sex slave didn’t do the trick, he’d have kept pushing the envelope.
If it wasn’t for Frank, Raniere would probably still be out there committing ever more serious crimes. Others deserve a lot of credit, but it was Frank who brought things to the point of decisive legal intervention.
In Roman Catholic theology, demonic possession begins to occur when the individual gives over their will and decision-making to a foreign entity. Raniere “in flesh” acted exactly like the demonic entities described in said theology. Exactly!
In Roman Catholic “theology,” there are lots of guilt-driven ways to separate people from their money.
I think the fact that he branded these women under a group that effectively glamorized slavery as female empowerment and its revelation during the height of the #metoo movement which was perpetually on the front page of entertainment and other forms of news for weeks on end also played a significant part.
Had he not been the leader and these women were simply doing this on their own and for themselves, I don’t think it would’ve garnered such media negativity.
What got the FBI/DOJ involved wasn’t the branding, but the blackmailing. There are sensationalist stories in the news all of the time, only some of them are criminal.
It also helped tremendously that the NYT published a PICTURE of the brand. Just talking about it doesn’t have the same impact as a woman pulling her pants down a bit and exposing the brand in a PICTURE.

It grabbed mine along with Allison Mack’s name attached. In fact, Allison Mack’s name recognition helped to boost the story to a larger audience.
Mack’s Smallville was shown all around the world. Smallville was on tv for a decade. Mack ended up being a tremendous liability.
But at the end of the day, the article and the photo of Sarah got the story out to the masses!
