Mack had means, and opportunity, at the outset to remove herself from this cult.
After a period of time, and with her eyes wide open, she chose to stay and became an active participant.
Therefor I have no sympathy for her.

You’re omitting the inconvenient fact that Edmondson said that “the actual branding itself was in Alison Mack’s home” – and as Lauren Salzman testified, hers was also. Mack’s residence was branding central, and she oversaw many of the ceremonies there, if not that particular one.
We will probably find out a lot more when Edmondson’s book comes out, and revelations of what went on are likely to demonstrate more clearly Mack’s depth of involvement.

This article has a lot wrong with it. It’s apples:oranges, to compare Mack to Maxwell.
1. Maxwell comes from a highly-connected, superrich family, with global connections at the highest levels in the social strata. Mack couldn’t even get near 99% of the people that Maxwell could call on the telephone.
2. Like her father, Maxwell is a Mossad agent. She hasn’t been seen in public since the recent events with Epstein’s arrest. Doesn’t that strike anybody as odd, considering that we live in the age of mass surveillance, with security cameras everywhere, facial recognition, automated license plate readers, and all kinds of other privacy-eliminating “tools”?? She hasn’t been spotted at all, by anyone, even though her face is all over the news? She’s obviously getting help from somebody, unless she was considered a ‘loose-end’, killed off, and written off as collateral damage.
3. Epstein’s trafficking ring was a blackmail operation, sanctioned by the Israeli government, and done with the full blessing of the US government. Even with Bronfman money backing him, a nobody like Keith Rainiere couldn’t pull off a sophisticated operation like this was, since neither he, nor the people under him were all that smart.
4. Mack is a gullible fool of a woman, who was basically manipulated into doing bad things because she thought it would please Rainiere. Useful idiot, is all Allison Mack was. Maxwell on the other hand, is highly-educated and skilled (helicopter pilot, submarine pilot, undersea robot controller are just some of the things she knows how to do). Maxwell did what she did to help grow and improve Epstein’s operation. She not only willingly participated, but was instrumental in acquiring victims. She also used her social connections to bring a lot of marks under the thumb of the operation.
I’m not yet entirely convinced that Allison Mack was a full member or Raniere’s inner circle in the same sense that others were. I suspect that she was a special project of Raniere’s. She is guilty of more than she was convicted of, but I think that for Raniere she had a special status all of her own. Her low level of intelligence and poor sense of self, made her a perfect subject for some of his more invasive mind control experiments. I doubt that she was in the know about many of his crimes to the degree that other members of his inner circle were. She had little or no capacity for resistance. She was uniquely suitable for his experimentation. I would estimate her emotional maturity to be roughly equivalent to that of the average 12-14 year old. So yes, she was in the inner circle, but in a different way than the others, and with a very different role. Even thought guilty, she was chosen early on to be a patsy, and deflect attention from the other guilty parties. To a large extent, she has fulfilled that function well. Consider how much more attention the likes of Nancy Salzman and the Bronfman sisters would have received, had not Mack been so carefully groomed to deflect it. All the photos of her subsequent to her arrest, portray a person in a state of complete bafflement. To my mind that is explained by two things: Her low intelligence and her ignorance of many of Raniere’s other crimes. She deserves a lengthy prison sentence; but she also warrants much more thoughtful analysis of her personality and unique role in Raniere’s plans.
Spot-on analysis, I think. I pity her, actually, because her “free choices” were manipulated so greatly by Raniere, and her former fame only helped her be the patsy (just look at the number of headlines focusing on her compared to Nancy Salzman, who arguably was far deeper in as far as many of the crimes went – and how many of them played off her Smallville role). Doesn’t mean I don’t think she deserves prison time, because she does, but she’s more tragic than evil, from what I’ve seen, certain people’s obsessions notwithstanding. All of us have darker impulses, but there’s a real difference between someone who knowingly dwells in them, and someone who’s manipulated into them. Raniere and co. knew just how to get people to do evil while thinking they were doing the right thing; someone like Maxwell knows full well what’s right and wrong, they just don’t care – and it’s that level of evil I’m more concerned about going after. One problem in our society is that we too often throw the book at the people like Allison Mack – and leave the Ghislaine Maxwells off the hook. The latter should be targeted far more!

I view the likes of Raniere, Saville, Epstein, and Maxwell as ‘Transgressionists’ or adherents of ‘Transgressionism’. Hmm, you have some good points. The time she’s spent under house arrest could arguably count. I guess a lot of it might have to do with the difference between punishment for crimes and true justice. If we go by a reflex “this crime deserves this time” (which many readers on here seem to do, with an almost vicious glee) she would need prison time for the things she’s done. If we go by a more nuanced sense of what the individual criminal actually should get as a consequence, then I would say she has already been punished quite severely (given her limited intelligence/maturity and the amount of manipulation she was subject to in order to get her to do the things she did), and a suspended sentence or at least a very reduced one would be appropriate (though I’m not sure if those who were directly affected by her actions would agree, as they feel the results much more keenly). Her following of Raniere damaged her health, destroyed her reputation, and ruined any chances of her finding future work in the profession she used to love. She’ll have a hard enough time recovering from that. I really hope she gets a good therapist at some point; she needs it.
