I Hope Jeffrey Epstein Sings Like a Bird

Jeffrey Epstein with Donald Trump

By Son of Bangkok

The wealthy and well-connected financier and registered sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein,  was arrested this week in New York on accusations of child sex trafficking. He just may bring a lot of bad men – and a few bad women – down with him.

Epstein allegedly groomed and recruited dozens of underage girls, many of them vulnerable runaways, for sex with him and his friends. Despite being caught by authorities, Epstein has largely evaded serious punishment.

Thanks to heroic reporting by Julie K. Brown at the Miami Herald, Americans learned that back in 2008, Epstein was given an exceptionally favorable plea deal by then- prosecutor Alex Acosta – now Trump’s secretary of labor.

The deal was shamefully hidden from Epstein’s victims, and while it forced Epstein to register as a sex offender, it allowed him near-total freedom for the 13 months he was technically in jail – he was allowed to leave the facility to work in his luxurious private office instead of serving life in prison.

It’s unclear why Epstein was given such favorable treatment. But given who his friends are, speculation has run rampant that his powerful connections (and the potential wrongdoings of other powerful men) may have had a hand in keeping him in relative freedom.

Epstein’s friends and contacts include President Donald Trump, President Bill Clinton, Prince Andrew, and high-powered attorney Alan Dershowitz, among many others. In 2002, Trump characterized Epstein as a “terrific guy” who enjoyed the company of girls “on the younger side.”

In the immediate aftermath of Epstein’s arrest, Twitter exploded with political gotchas.

On the right, it’s near-gospel that President Bill Clinton and Epstein are jet-setting pals, and that Clinton is at best complicit and at worst a participant in Epstein’s sex crimes. (We know Clinton used Epstein’s private jet for work related to the Clinton Foundation; according to Clinton, they were always accompanied by Secret Service agents or Clinton Foundation staff.)

On the left, Trump opponents wonder if the president was ever a participant in Epstein’s sexual crimes. Trump was at one point accused by a young woman of raping her at Epstein’s New York home when she was 13; the lawsuit in which those accusations were made was withdrawn by the accuser. We also know that Trump and Epstein socialized, that Trump’s various phone numbers were written in Epstein’s notorious little black book, and that Epstein was once asked whether he had ever been around Trump and underage girls – and he invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.

This is not a story in which anyone should find satisfaction. Dozens of vulnerable girls were allegedly sexually exploited and abused by Jeffrey Epstein. A great many adults, who should have done the right thing and stood up for these children, chose to look the other way. A few may have even participated in exploitation and rape.

The only way forward is to demand accountability from Epstein, his co-conspirators, and his enablers, without exception and without excuse. Who knew what was going on? Who participated? How, exactly, did Epstein get such a sweet plea deal in Florida?

Wherever these questions lead, prosecutors and reporters must follow. And the public must demand real accountability, no matter the answers.

What happens next will be revealing. Any person who participated in or knew about Epstein’s alleged trafficking ring should face (in addition to jail time) total public rejection. If they hold public office, they must resign or be forced out. If they are a lion of politics or public life, they must retreat, live with this profound shame, and know it will taint their legacy forever.

Unfortunately, this isn’t how we’ve treated abusive and predatory men for most of human history. While that’s changing – the #MeToo movement has made an incredible impact – it still seems that a man’s punishment remains contingent on who he is, how powerful he is, and who his allies are. It’s also looking increasingly partisan.

While Democrats are far from innocent when it comes to letting badly-behaved men off the hook, the American left has largely stepped up in recent years and demanded accountability from its own. Well-loved men like Al Franken have stepped down in the wake of sexual misconduct. Men whose bad behavior has been long known, like Bill Clinton, are seeing their legacies stained as modern feminists are increasingly willing to criticize their bad acts.

When it comes to Epstein, the left is ready and willing to take down anyone who let him get away with his crimes – whoever they are, and however they vote.

But is the political right ready and willing to do the same?

Aside from the hopeful conservative claims that Clinton is going down, the actual commitment of conservatives to punishing men for sexual wrongdoing is an outstanding question.

Many, many times over, we have seen prominent conservative figures accused of sexual harassment or assault, only to have the most prominent figures on the right just deny it. Women who accuse liberal men of wrongdoing, the thinking seems to be, are to be believed. Women who accuse right-wing men are liars.

Just look at Brett Kavanaugh, who sits on the Supreme Court despite a credible claim of sexual assault and attempted rape. Or Donald Trump, who has been accused of sexual misdeeds by more than two dozen women – and most recently of rape. Or Alex Acosta, Trump’s labor secretary, who is the reason Jeffrey Epstein isn’t sitting in federal prison.

Too many of the same people salivating over the possibility that some liberal men will be implicated in the Epstein case are too happy to shrug off serious allegation of sexual crimes when those allegations are leveled against men whose politics they share.

Holding people accountable for abusing girls should be a nonpartisan affair. Sadly, in the Trump era of lowered expectations and even more dismal behavior, we can’t even count on that.

Disgraced Billionaire Jeffrey Epstein’s Art World Connections

Yesterday, the New York Post reported that financier Leon Black, who was last year named chairman at the Museum of Modern Art, retained Epstein as the sole non-family director of his family charity for more than a decade. Tax records indicate that Epstein stayed with the Black Family Foundation through the end of 2012, four years after he pleaded guilty in 2008 to two charges of soliciting prostitution — one involving a minor — which resulted in a sweetheart deal of only 18-months with 13 served.

An unnamed source told the newspaper that Epstein’s personal relationship with Black has continued through the years. In 2015, the disgraced billionaire was spotted at a lavish pool party thrown at Black’s Hamptons estate. Black — who amassed his $7 billion fortune after co-founding the buyout firm Apollo Global Management — has not yet responded to press inquiries for comment.

Federal prosecutors intercepted Epstein on Saturday at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey after investigators discovered a cache of lewd photographs of girls kept within a safe stored at the billionaire’s 45,000-square-foot mansion located on Museum Mile. Hours after his arrest, several other women contacted the bureau with complaints against the former convict.

One of the latest accusations comes from Maria Farmer, who filed an affidavit in April claiming that Epstein leveraged her dreams of becoming an artist against her when she was a 25-year-old student at the New York Academy of Art. The billionaire allegedly assaulted her and her younger sister, who was only 15 years old at the time.

“Epstein said that if I sold him one of my paintings for half price he would help me with my career,” Farmer wrote about their encounter at her art opening in 1995, according to the affidavit. She agreed and sold him an artwork for $6,000.

A year later, Farmer was recruited to help Epstein “with acquiring art.” The job included both buying art and monitoring who came into his home. During this time, she claims to have seen numerous young girls come through the house, some still in uniforms. She also claims that Dershowitz was there and would sometimes go upstairs where the girls were led.

The account appears within Virginia Giuffre’s defamation lawsuit against Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz, who has been accused of participating in Epstein’s trafficking operation. (Dershowitz has also served as Epstein’s lawyer over the years.) Giuffre claims that when she was a 16-year-old locker-room attendant at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, the British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell recruited her to work as a masseuse for Epstein. Her lawsuit claims that Epstein later “lent” her out for sex to his friends, including Dershowitz.

The summer after Farmer began working for Epstein, he arranged for her to work on an art project at the Ohio mansion of his friend Leslie Wexner — the billionaire businessman and Victoria’s Secret founder who gave Epstein his New York mansion. It was there that she claims she was sexually assaulted by Epstein and his girlfriend Maxwell.

“I fled from the room and called the sheriff’s office but did not get any response,” Farmer writes in the affidavit. “The Wexner’s security staff refused to let me leave the property. I pleaded with them and my father drove up from Kentucky to Ohio to help me. I was held against my will for approximately 12 hours until I was ultimately allowed to leave with my father.”

She filed a report with the FBI upon returning to New York but says she doesn’t know if any action was taken.

That summer, Epstein allegedly flew Farmer’s younger sister to visit him at his New Mexico ranch where he “directed her to take off all of her clothes and get on a massage table,” whereupon he and Maxwell molested her, according to the affidavit. “It was not until later in the summer … that I learned what had happened to her,” Farmer wrote.

The artist couldn’t escape the billionaire and British socialite, even upon returning to New York. “Maxwell and Epstein contacted my art clients and individuals in the art community in an effort to ruin my art career,” she wrote. They “were successful and I was shut out of all art related opportunities.” She also said that she’s had to move several times in order to hide from Epstein, who worked to ensure her art career was “ruined.”

In an interview with Democracy Now, the journalist Vicky Ward said that she first learned of Farmer’s allegations while reporting on Epstein for Vanity Fair in 2003. Unfortunately, the magazine’s editor, Graydon Carter, cut that section from her piece after taking a meeting with the billionaire. Ward also verified Farmer and her sister’s account with several witnesses, including the artist Eric Fischl, who had been a postgraduate instructor for Farmer at the Santa Fe Art Institute.

Last year, Epstein was the subject of a Miami Herald report on how Alexander Acosta (then a US attorney in Miami and now President Trump’s Secretary of Labor) offered the billionaire the plea deal of a lifetime despite ample evidence and a 53-page federal indictment. Victims in the case were not notified of the deal, which also ended an FBI probe into the allegations. In January of last year, Acosta tried to slash the budget of a government anti-trafficking program by almost 80 percent.

“I have struggled throughout my life as a direct result of Epstein and Maxwell’s actions,” Farmer wrote in the affidavit, “and my hope is that they will be held accountable for their crimes.”

“While Democrats are far from innocent when it comes to letting badly-behaved men off the hook, the American left has largely stepped up in recent years and demanded accountability from its own.”

As someone who is an Independent and whose voter registration has read “No Party Affiliation” for many, many years, I couldn’t help but laugh out loud when I read this part. My wife even peeked her head into the den to see what I was chuckling about. Now, if you had said “the American left has largely been dragged kicking and screaming while reluctantly ……”, you at least would have been sorta in the neighborhood of the truth. Sorta.

Speaking on behalf of those of us who are decent and civilized people, do not go around as if the political left holds some higher moral ground than the political right or is to be admired above them. That completely undermines any of the good points you did try and make.

On NXIVM–You should give the credit to the NYTimes articles on branding.
On Epstein–You should give the credit for the Miami Herald articles on the Epstein/Acosta’s plea deal.
I know it is warm and cozy being up Trump’s big fat white ass, but you might learn something if you got out more.

Comment Re: Labor Secretary & former prosecutor Alex Acosta.

I am a Republican and listen to AM conservative talk radio and some of my favorite radio talk shows are defending Alex Acosta’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case.

WTF?

Has this country gotten so partisan that Clinton can sexually assault women, and Alex Acosta can give away a huge sweetheart plea bargain…..

……And people on the left and right will just defend their guy?

The guest view is politically slanted but mostly true.

The message is simple. Everyone, Democrat and Republican, needs to be held accountable and we should not play political football with the lives of young girls. This is not a partisan issue. This is an issue of basic respect and protection of children.

Thanks for your support.

Son of Bang Kok July 10, 2019 at 3:58 pm : Absolutely agree with this!

People seem to try to make it a political issue and in a way it is (as politician from BOTH SIDES (Clinton AND Trump, for example) were protecting him).
But what is important isn’t the side that committed the most crimes connected to Epstein, but that ALL of them pay for it.
No matter the side.

It’s really incredible to believe that a story so gruesome that could have been avoided SOOO long ago is only in the spotlight (hopefully for good) now.
How many victims could have been avoided in this?…

Damn this world sucks more an more by days.

Perhaps that was their meaning, but the way it was worded sounded threatening. Even if she was lying (which I doubt), it’s not acceptable for Trump supporters to threaten her and her family.

I tend to agree. If he had anything on these main players that keep getting mentioned, the NYC and Hollywood elites would have gotten word from these main players through their surrogates and would have dropped him from their party list. Epstein lived to be among the rich and famous, so I’m thinking it’s highly unlikely he has any “collateral” on them. Maybe on some minor players as name-dropping goes, but not the Clinton/Trump/Obama/Prince Andrew types of the world.

Pea:

Your Vanguard might be partly right.
It is more probable that Epstein worked for Israeli Intelligence, not the CIA.
To be precise the Mossad.
Epstein’s Manhattan mansion as well as his Palm Beach home were both equipped with cameras to record wealthy and powerful men engaging in illicit activities with underage girls and the idea was to blackmail them.
And one of Epstein’s top assistants Ghislane Maxwell is the daughter of a now deceased businessman named Robert Maxwell.
Journalist Seymour Hersh wrote around 1990 that Robert Maxwell was a Mossad agent.

Bombshell: Alex Acosta Reportedly Claimed Jeffrey Epstein “Belonged To Intelligence”
“Is the Epstein case going to cause a problem [for confirmation hearings]?” Acosta had been asked. Acosta had explained, breezily, apparently, that back in the day he’d had just one meeting on the Epstein case. He’d cut the non-prosecution deal with one of Epstein’s attorneys because he had “been told” to back off, that Epstein was above his pay grade. “I was told Epstein ‘belonged to intelligence’ and to leave it alone,” he told his interviewers in the Trump transition, who evidently thought that was a sufficient answer and went ahead and hired Acosta. (The Labor Department had no comment when asked about this.)…

For almost two decades, for some nebulous reason, whether to do with ties to foreign intelligence, his billions of dollars, or his social connections, Epstein, whose alleged sexual sickness and horrific assaults on women without means or ability to protect themselves is well-known in his circle, remained untouchable.

Many people had assumed Epstein was untouchable merely because he had so much dirt on so many powerful people, but it increasingly looks far bigger than that. It appears he may have been untouchable because he was systematically collecting this information on behalf of an intelligence agency. If so, we need to find out precisely who he was working for.
https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-07-10/bombshell-alex-acosta-reportedly-claimed-jeffrey-epstein-belonged-intelligence

From a story in the Daily Beast by Vicky Ward:
A couple of years ago, I was interviewing a former senior White House official when the name Jeffrey Epstein came up.

Unaware of my personal history with Epstein, this person assured me that the New York financier was no serious harm to anyone. He was a good guy. A charming guy. Useful, too. He knew a lot of rich Arabs, including the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, and, further, he had clever ideas about creating bond issues for them. “OK, so he has a girl problem,” this person threw on, almost as an afterthought.
Epstein’s name, I was told, had been raised by the Trump transition team when Alexander Acosta, the former U.S. attorney in Miami who’d infamously cut Epstein a non-prosecution plea deal back in 2007, was being interviewed for the job of labor secretary. The plea deal put a hard stop to a separate federal investigation of alleged sex crimes with minors and trafficking.

(The Labor Department had no comment when asked about this.)
