Street drugs in prison sell for multiples of what they sell for on the streets; a bundle of heroin might cost $50 on the street – in prison, that same bundle can be worth $500. Years ago, a prisoner at NSP even managed to get a live frag grenade onto his block. I was working there when that happened, but was not on shift.

Cell phones are a popular contraband item in prisons and the main way the leaders of criminal organizations keep giving orders to their groups from behind prison walls.
Phone calls, window visits, and contact visits are all monitored communications. Using a cell phone, prison officials have no way to monitor what’s being said and the prisoners all know it.
There are a few ways Keith Raniere could get access to a cell phone.
1. His lawyers smuggled one in to him. (Not likely, but it has been known to happen).
2. A Guard smuggled one in to him, for a fee. This is a very good possibility, and usually how phones get inside.
3. A prisoner with contact visitation, or who’s part of a work release program got him one, for a fee. Very possible too, but harder to do with contact visitation.
4. He’s buying phone time from another inmate who has a phone. An inmate will sell time to other inmates sometimes, usually in exchange for items from the prison commissary.
If Raniere is in the SHU, he’s probably not around anyone on work release, but with his access to money, he wouldn’t have a hard time getting a phone.
The feds have listening devices we can’t imagine, the dilemma is are they using them. By this I mean are they actually doing their jobs? Getting rid of Strzok was a start, technically not related to this case but it relates to the willingness of the FBI/DOJ and others to do their jobs.
