The superseding indictment charging Nancy Salzman, Lauren Salzman, Clare Bronfman and Kathy Russell – along with Keith Raniere and Allison Mack – of running a criminal racketeering enterprise that included money laundering, extortion, sex trafficking and obstruction of justice as part of its operations – has now seen the new defendants all appear before judges in Albany and Brooklyn.
The two Salzmans – mother Nancy and daughter Lauren – were arrested and handcuffed – along with poor little Kathy Russell – their witless bookkeeper of many years.
Clare Bronfman was also taken into custody by federal agents in New York City. We are awaiting word from our correspondents at the scene.
The story of the arrests was broken first by the media outlet that has probably broken the most stories about NXIVM [with the possible exception of the Frank Report] the Albany Times Union.
Russell was first to appear – before U.S. Magistrate Daniel Stewart in Albany today. She would have been released on $25,000 cash bail. Her attorney said she had no access to cash. Federal prosecutors had asked for $50,000.
She remains in custody at last report. This is another example of the efficacy of Executive Success Programs -Russell has worked for NXIVM – and took the Executive Success Program courses – for some 17 years – and could not come up with even a modest bail.
Lauren Salzman’s grandparents (Nancy’s Mother and father) — who are traveling from New Jersey today — agreed to pay $50,000 cash against a $5 million bond. If the money is delivered on time, Lauren will get bail. Her mom, Nancy Salzman will be released pending the signing of a $5 million surety bond that will be signed by her parents and her friend, Capital Region resident David Messing.
Within 10 days, Nancy will have to provide authorities with information on eight properties she owns that have a combined estimated value of $1 million (What kind of houses are these that are only worth $125,000 each?)
The mother and daughter Salzmans will be allowed to maintain contact with each other, the judge said, because Lauren is helping care for her mother, who is facing what he termed a life-threatening medical condition.
Frank Report revealed last summer that Nancy had told friends she had cancer. This would be her second bout with the dreaded disease (She claims to have been cured the first time by Vanguard’s “technology”).
The Salzmans will appear in federal court tomorrow alongside their Vanguard – and Allison Mack – at 2 p.m. in Brooklyn.
Bronfman was scheduled to make her court appearance at 3 p.m. today in Brooklyn.
Raniere, 57, has been denied bail and Mack is free on home arrest, an ankle monitor and $5 million bail; she lives with her parents in Orange County California – although she is expected to be in Brooklyn tomorrow – joining her Vanguard, her Prefect, [Nancy Salzman,] her fellow slave, Lauren Salzman and the stooge, Kathy Russell.
Poor Kathy – so many times I tried to warn her to leave – and cut a deal. She was defiant and now sits in custody.
The fate of Karen Unterreiner, Karen Abney, Emiliano Salinas, Alejandro Betancourt, James Del Negro and a host of others – hangs in the balance. More arrests are possible.
But poor Kathy Russell – such a low-level member. Maybe she is proud to be thought of so highly to be arrested in the same batch as Prefect and Clare Bronfman.
Kathy was best at keeping double sets of books. Keith kept her at a low salary and often made fun of her to the others. She was the butt of many of his jokes.
He told Kathy that if she followed his teachings carefully – and paid for all the courses – and worked at low wages – to heal her ethical breaches – she could become a star ballerina – her dream – she would become a world-famous Prima Donna.
The problem is that she is 60 years old.

There are many houses that are worth that–small, ranch style homes aren’t that expensive and Nancy could own a crop of them.
You make a huge assumption that Mark and Sarah didn’t pay their taxes. Do you have any proof they didn’t.
Not everyone in NXIVM avoided their taxes. I was questioned often about why I paid my taxes since it was an unethical system according to NXIVM. I continued to pay my taxes even though I often got punished for it.
After I left NXIVM, the NY State AG contacted me a few times. I told them about the tax issues (as others have) and that Nancy Salzman, Barbara Jeske and other high levels personally told me that they were not paying their taxes personally or NXIVM corp.
NOTHING was done about taxes nor are there any charges regarding taxes, yet in this case.
Both Mark and Sarah have done a great deal to expose this criminal organization and without them, most likely would still be branding women and gathering sex slave for Vanpoo.

I really respect the fact that when he found out from Sarah Edmonston what was going on, he immediately shut down the Los Angeles centre. He has been very outspoken against NXIVM since then, too, which loads of other people (Kreuk, Hildreth, et al) have not had the morals or courage to do. I am not sure why he deleted all his blog posts about his experiences around getting out of NXIVM, but I am sure he had a good reason. It could have to do with him testifying in the future.
So, I do think it is important to give him some credit for what he has done since then.
I wouldn’t want to be white in South Africa these days. My understanding is that he was in the US legally prior to getting involved in NXIVM, and he is also married to a woman who is in the US legally.
At any rate, I expect he will testify at trial. Like I said, I hope he has made his peace with whatever powers that be, so he and his wife can get on with their lives.
In the meantime, I still think it is important to support people who have gotten out. Especially when their degree of actively speaking out and working to stop NXIVM is appropriate for their level of past involvement.
Mark Vicente did not immediately shut down the LA branch when women came forward in 2012 talking about how they were raped by Keith Raniere when they were children, even with a police report published. He and Edmondson both stayed in another five years, making money for themselves and the cult. Both of them must of known about tax evasion and money laundering operations. Why would they not be investigated and even charged if they did? A crime is a crime. You can’t say they can settle their tax situation and move on. They should be investigated for not declaring taxes for all those years.
You mention Kreuk and Hildreth. Both of them were deeply involved with the cult and are not being spoken about.

When people come forward and admit the situation and settle with Canada Revenue or the IRS, there is nothing to investigate. It is just like how a judge has no case to see when there is no dispute. Persons are only ever prosecuted for tax evasion when they lie and / or refuse to file. Persons who haven’t filed can usually avoid that by just going in and being honest.
They can absolutely settle with the relevant agencies and get on with their lives as best they can. Witnesses are generally not prosecuted, and both of them came forward without anything hanging over their heads as far as criminal charges. It is not like they were indicted and then cut a deal.
They have been emotionally damaged, too, and have a lot of healing to do. At least they can do it with their heads held high, because they have done the honourable thing and done whatever they can to stop this from happening to anybody else.
Ironically, it is a bit ridiculous to say that I mentioned people and say they aren’t being spoken about. They were just spoken about.
Not twisting your comments. Start again. Many victims and opponents of NXIVM came forward over the years including victims of Keith Raniere’s paedophilia in 2012. Many whistleblowers were attacked by the cult. Both the LA and Vancouver branches stayed open. It was not until Edmondson was personally affected that she left along with Vicente. Vicente shut down his branch after Edmondson was affected, not when early victims were affected.
As for the tax evasion, admitting to a crime (not paying taxes on purpose) does not change the fact you committed a crime. That is what was meant. You can try and do the right thing, but you still committed a crime. That was the point.
