Clare Bronfman released on $100 million bail – house arrest, ankle monitor and no contact with Nxivm members

In Brooklyn, Clare Bronfman’s attorney entered a not guilty plea on behalf of her client.

Federal Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis released Bronfman on a $100 million bond with home detention and electronic monitoring (ankle bracelet). She reportedly also been ordered not to have contact with anyone who is associated with NXIVM – which may be very difficult for her to do because she really doesn’t know anyone else.

Bronfman is due back in court on Wednesday (tomorrow) for a Status Conference with her co-defendants before Judge Garaufis at 2 p.m. Her newly-named co-defendants, Nancy Salzman and Lauren Salzman, have also been ordered to be there.

In Albany, the three defendants entered not guilty pleas to the superseding indictment.

Magistrate Stewart agreed to release Kathy Russell on a $25,000 bond – and each of the Salzmans on separate $5 million bonds.

My latest information is that Russell and Lauren Salzman have not met all the conditions of their bonds and may not be released today. That means they’ll spend the night in prison – which usually means a full body search.

Russell – based on the federal guidelines for the crimes she’s been charged with – faces 3 years in prison.

Russell and Lauren Salzman appeared in court in shackles – and Russell was handcuffed in front. Nancy Salzman walked into court on her own volition – without handcuffs.

Clare Bronfman was arrested earlier today – and was handcuffed.

As of right now, the only one who is out of federal custody is Bronfman. The other three are in still in federal custody. Nancy is expected to be released today. But even the Prefect may have to spend the night in jail and undergo a full body search.

Clare spent millions on a horse farm in Delanson (Knox NY) she lost interest shortly after purchase.

Flip flops, jeans and a t-shirt screams, “I’m not really taking this seriously.”

I’m taking a stab in the dark here, but I would guess her attorneys are going to petition the court for a separate trial.

I shouldn’t believe everything I read. In the video of the Daily Mail article about Clare’s arrest, you can clearly see, if only briefly, that she is wearing sneakers.

Is Toni Natale or anyone else who was at the hearing out there reading this? Did anyone actually see her in flip flops? It might seem like a minor point, but to me the difference between some wearing sneakers to court doesn’t indicate the same level of nonchalance and disrespect to the court as someone wearing flip flops.

The lawyer could have shown up with a pair of shoes for her so that she didn’t have to leave court in flip flops. Who knows.

Seriously, though, I wouldn’t assume that she showed up in court in any attire by choice. Even when they know it is coming, they don’t necessarily know when, and I have not seen anywhere that she surrendered herself, so I am pretty sure they went into her apartment and got her this morning.

Feds statement, states Clare was in NXIVM since 2009. Untrue, she was involved in 2008 for sure, and I suspect even earlier.

It says she was on the Executive Board since 2009. I had the first reaction when I read it, and then I read it again. She and Sara were both around when I went a few years earlier.

John Tigue from the Saratoga in Decline blog claimed that during the NXIVM cult summit on Necker Island in 2010, the Executive Board was formed and Claire Bronfman was named “Chief of Operations”. If Tigue is right, she was on the Executive Board at least by 2010.

Sara was the first to join nxivm. In the fall of 2002, when the group was still known as Executive Success Programs, she took one of its “intensives”—workshops that today last anywhere from 5 to 16 days and cost about $7,500.

Sara urged Clare, then 23, to take an intensive. At the time, Clare was passionately committed to her equestrian career—she was a competitive jumper, trained horses, and owned her own company, Slate River Farm—which might explain why she was a tougher sell. According to a former nxivm member, at her first workshop, in Mexico, Clare refused to look people in the eye. She showed up in a dirty T-shirt. “She had a defiant air about her. She was more angry than Sara—angry at the world,” this woman recalls. “She would tell people that she had decided to spend the rest of her life with horses, because she didn’t like human beings.”

Clare would have been much better off staying with the horses. Imagine how she could be doing what she loved. Imagine how much weaker NXVIM would be ? What a waste of time, money and lives or other people as well as her own. Tragic.

I wonder which one of these geniuses will come up with the idea to sell all the “collateral” to some porn purveyor to make bail money.

That sounds like someone who was trying to make her escape to a tropical island.

Things Clare can afford: a tropical island, real shoes, and more calories. Things she can’t buy: sanity, happiness, or an arrest-free life. I bet her lawyer is already totally frustrated with her (flip-flops! In court!).

She might have been told that the Judge could deny her bail. Therefore, why dress up if going straight into custody.

That would be logical. But then again, what do you expect from someone who never graduated High School?

She may not have actually expected to be arrested this morning. She is likely wearing whatever she had on at the time or an officer took out of the closet for her to put on.

It’s not like she has ever been super stylish or had great fashion sense, anyhow.

Keith would be proud. She clearly consumes less than 500 calories a day. Possibly a week. She looks like a stick. A very old wrinkly stick.

This article has her press statement. I find it to be the fullest “official” picture to date of what to expect in their defense. I wonder if she will have talking heads on TV appear as well. What a circus.

How funny! At the end of this dreadful, low energy stroll she meekly reaches out to open the door of a dark SUV, only to be told it is the wrong vehicle. Of course, her mournful-looking assistant opens the correct door for her, perhaps because Ms. Bronfman is too weak from the special diet Mr. Parlato has told us about or because she is uneducated.

So NXIVM ladies, those lucky enough to bypass jail for the moment: wear a thick sock to prevent chafing. Also, grow a conscience.

Okay they are all going to be released? Is that what I understand? That means under house arrest but not allowed any contact with NXVIM? Okay virtually anyone that they have contact with are in NXVIM. House arrest means they can’t leave the house ? How are they going to eat?

I don’t think anyone else is on house arrest. Only Allison and Clare, which should really piss Allison off that Lauren is getting off so easily when she is just as culpable. Oh well, just another breach to heal.

Not that Clare looks like she eats much of anything at all, she can get plenty of veggies delivered in NYC.

Nuts!

The shackles are two pairs of cuffs and chains. Your ankles are cuffed. Then your hands are cuffed.

Lastly, there is a chain that goes around your waist, and your handcuffs are chained to the waist chain. So you cannot raise your hands fully or touch your face.

All for what? For Keith Raniere? The broken Messiah of a fcked up religion that teaches ethics???

She will just claim there are no more members since the organisation is shut down. No way she isn’t going to talk to Sara (basically, her only friend and only family), who is 100% still involved.

It isn’t any different than Allison Mack being released to her parents who are both members, even if her father was more active than her mother.

They also didn’t mention which house, Clare owns many, some homes, other NXIVM members currently occupy.

About the Author

Frank Parlato is an investigative journalist.

His work has been cited in hundreds of news outlets, like The New York Times, The Daily Mail, VICE News, CBS News, Fox News, New York Post, New York Daily News, Oxygen, Rolling Stone, People Magazine, The Sun, The Times of London, CBS Inside Edition, among many others in all five continents.

His work to expose and take down NXIVM is featured in books like “Captive” by Catherine Oxenberg, “Scarred” by Sarah Edmonson, “The Program” by Toni Natalie, and “NXIVM. La Secta Que Sedujo al Poder en México” by Juan Alberto Vasquez.

Parlato has been prominently featured on HBO’s docuseries “The Vow” and was the lead investigator and coordinating producer for Investigation Discovery’s “The Lost Women of NXIVM.” Parlato was also credited in the Starz docuseries "Seduced" for saving 'slave' women from being branded and escaping the sex-slave cult known as DOS.

Additionally, Parlato’s coverage of the group OneTaste, starting in 2018, helped spark an FBI investigation, which led to indictments of two of its leaders in 2023.

Parlato appeared on the Nancy Grace Show, Beyond the Headlines with Gretchen Carlson, Dr. Oz, American Greed, Dateline NBC, and NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, where Parlato conducted the first-ever interview with Keith Raniere after his arrest. This was ironic, as many credit Parlato as one of the primary architects of his arrest and the cratering of the cult he founded.

Parlato is a consulting producer and appears in TNT's The Heiress and the Sex Cult, which premiered on May 22, 2022. Most recently, he consulted and appeared on Tubi's "Branded and Brainwashed: Inside NXIVM," which aired January, 2023.
