Since there has been so much speculation – and, worse yet, so much misinformation – being posted here about John Tighe, I thought it might make sense to simply post some of the details that he has shared with me regarding his current situation and some of the events that led up to it (I’m in regular contact with him – and got his permission to do this). Because I don’t record my phone calls, the best I can do is recount all that I remember from our discussions.
To begin with, I have never asked John about the origins of the child porn that was found on his computer. But I do know that, according to John, the quote that was attributed to him by NYS Senior Investigator Rodger Kirsopp was inaccurate.
All John said at the time was that all the guns and computers that were in the household belonged to him. He did not ask Senior Investigator Kirsopp or anyone else not to tell his wife about anything that was found on the computers.
I also know some of the factors that led John to take a plea deal. First, he did not have the money that would have been required to pay for an attorney to go to trial – and, given the stakes, he was unwilling to be represented by a public defender. Second, had he gone to trial and lost, he would have been facing a much longer sentence than what he got. Third, and most importantly, John was facing some severe, life-threatening medical problems at the time and had recently lost the health insurance that he got through his wife (Skidmore College decided to save a few bucks by canceling the health care coverage of some of its lowest paid workers, one of whom was John’s wife).
Since he’s been in prison, John has undergone numerous medical treatments – and is currently on the wait-list for a liver transplant. Because of his lack of medical insurance, he likely would not have had been able to get that same treatment outside of prison.
John, by the way, was never a “sanitation worker” for the City of Saratoga Springs. Instead, he worked as Mechanical Equipment Operator for the City’s Public Works Department (He drove backhoes, plows, and loaders). Prior to that, he worked for 15 years at Saratoga Hospital. He was also actively involved in the local political scene – and served on the Executive Reelection Committees of at least two mayors of Saratoga Springs.
For those of you who used to regularly read Saratoga In Decline, you know that NXIVM/ESP was never the focus of that blog. Instead, it was primarily focused on exposing local corruption in and around Saratoga Springs, of which there was – and is – plenty. His involvement with NXIVM/ESP grew out of his concern that the cult was trying to become a major political force in the town – and had already ensnared several prominent residents in its training programs. At the time that his computers were seized, John was actually working on a story that would have exposed the links between then-Mayoral candidate Joanne Yepsen and NXIVM/ESP.
Prior to the raid that was led by Senior Investigator Kirsopp, John’s entire computer system was under some sort of attack (John and I had discussed that problem several times because Toni Natalie and I were experiencing similar problems). And in the inventory of items that were seized from John’s home, there was at least one computer that did not belong to him.
So, was John set-up by the cult? I honestly don’t know. But the fact that the same Rodger Kirsopp was the lead investigator on the bullshit case that led to criminal computer trespass charges being brought against John, Toni Natalie and me is either one really big coincidence or just another indication of how much power the NXIVM cult wielded in and around Albany, NY.

You didn’t even ask him. Why would you not do that? No one is denying that he has done a lot to take on Raniere. If Tighe was known for asking the hard questions, so why didn’t you?
The problem these days is that no one wants the WHOLE truth. They just want to cherry pick the bits that suit them. Don’t say “the fact is” when you clearly don’t want all the facts. You listed a whole lot of reasons as to what kind of pressure he was under to plead guilty, ill health, finances, etc, but he never said he was innocent of the charges either.
We are talking about videos and images of children being abused. Don’t ignore it
Leave Tighe out of this story until he expressly states that he is innocent and he that was set up.
Aerial…how do you know what the images were of? We don’t know if they were images of young children, or of teenagers under 18 posing nude
. I wonder how it even came about that the police raided his home and seized his computers?Why did the police suspect him of having these images on his computer? If he had collected them himself,why would he make the police aware of that or show others the photos?
Pleading guilty could also be done for the reasons indicated – ill health and inability to afford a lawyer.
I don’t think he should be left out of the story because his blog and the things that happened to him (he reported that he was harassed and intimidated) are important. The harassment corresponds with the ongoing harassment of others who are involved with NXIVM.
The types of images found are on public record. Try under the age of 10. Seek and you shall find.
How the police came to find these images is also on public record. Tighe’s full admissions are also on public record.
The order to pay restitution to 3 victims……etc
Flowers, I would much prefer the narrative of Tighe being an innocent man, but I dislike bullshit.
If Tighe should be acknowledged for his contribution to this story, then his crimes must be acknowledged as well.

John, I was an avid reader and frequent commenter on your blog and it had a huge impact on me. I had never seen anything like it on the internet. And having known people in NXIVM and the history of the group, the way that you would take them on, so brazenly and so confidently showing no concern for your own safety and well-being continues to inspire me to this day. You called out their evil and you should always be mentioned in the same breath as Toni and Frank as one of the people who was pivotal in ending NXIVM’s reign. I loved how to just didn’t give a fuck about them and showed them no respect, even when they were threatening and harassing you. I’m so thankful you’re getting the medical care you need and I’m sending out thoughts and prayers that you continue to move toward better health.
I have never forgotten what you did for so many people. You are a hero.

I spent a great deal of time for almost seven years gathering evidence about the criminal activities of NXIVM and a number of people associated with NXIVM. Some of that evidence came from former members who were wanted to put an end to the criminal machine that Raniere oversaw and that the Bronfman sisters funded. Other evidence came from people who were never part of NXIVM but who were also interested in putting an end to the cult and its destructiveness – and from various public filings and records.
During the raid on my house that was conducted by the New York State Police on October 23, 2013, all my NXIVM-related materials were confiscated (They also seized all my computers). Despite the fact that the ensuing criminal computer trespass charges were subsequently dismissed, the Special Prosecutor in the case, Holly Trexler, refused to return any of my NXIVM-related materials and/or to return my computers unless they were “wiped clean” (She did the same thing with respect to everything that was seized from Toni Natalie)
The New York State Police adopted the same position as Ms. Trexler – and even though they had no standing in the case, they spent months trying to convince a judge that we were not entitled to get our materials and computers back intact. They even went so far as to invite one of NXIVM’s attorneys, Paul DerOhannesian, to intervene in the case.
Finally, the presiding judge ruled in our favor – and the New York State Police returned everything that they seized from me and Toni (At least, they said they returned everything). There’s more to be told as to what happened to our computers and our NXIVM-related materials while they were in the possession of the New York State Police. But that story will have to wait until a few more things unfold.

How did you come to establish these individuals as participants in criminal activity?
Joe, I really admire your reporting/writing skills. You share what facts you are able to and are never lazy or sloppy in your presentation of information. I have a sense you’re keeping quite a bit close to your vest ( or chest, if you prefer) and I hope some of what you can’t reveal has to do with the feds re-examining what exactly happened with each of your respective computers. I’m assuming statute of limitations hasn’t come in to play yet. Keep us posted!

Also, why not ask him if he put the porn on the computers? He’s already been sentenced, there is no harm that could come now.
It also makes sense that the same person from a small town law enforcement agency would be the lead in all 3 cases, as the expertise needed to investigate computer related crimes probably wasn’t spread out among other people.

Please provide evidence for this. I was an avid reader of John’s blog and I never saw this claim. I saw him post an article about the Necker Island event and pictures of some of those who attended, but I don’t remember any claim about money laundering.
The article is saved in the Saratoga in Decline archives. Tried to post the link but it won’t show up. It was posted in February 2012 if you want to search for it.
I did a search for it. There are no articles from Feb 2012 stored on the wayback machine. Therefore, no evidence that he made such a claim exists.

Wait a second. Why is there no mention of Sarah Edmondson? She was higher in rank than any of the other minor celebrities holding a green sash and the title of Proctor and was also the administrator of the Vancouver office. She was the business partner of Mark Vicente.
Also, it is John’s claim that ideas were batted around in order to find more efficient ways to launder money. It seems that this Necker Island meeting was exclusive and limited only to trusted membership of NXIVM. So how did John become aware of the private happenings that occurred there? Was there an existing mole at that time and who was it? Or was this just simply speculation on John’s part?
There were four (?) Necker Island NXIVM cult summit articles posted by John Tigue. In the comments section of one them, he said he had 300 photographs of the event. He also said someone in the photos was the leaker. He did not post all the pictures so perhaps there was a leaker in the photographs and he held back to protect him/her. However, Sara Bronfman rented out the whole island so if there was a leaker on the island, they surely could of worked out who it was and gone after them.
As for Sarah Edmondson, perhaps she was not seen as important as the others. Edmondson may of held a higher rank over the c-list celebrities but Kristin Kreuk especially was the cult’s most famous member.
You are right about the NXIVM cult summit being exclusive and only for trusted inner circle members. Mark Vicente’s mother Juliana Vicente was accused of helping with the money laundering from the Mexican operation. Siohban Hotaling was accused of laundering money from Canada to the US.
Kristin Kreuk, Allison Mack, Mark Hildreth, Everyone who was named in the Executive Board as well as Juliana Vicente and Siohban Hotaling were all named in Joseph O’Hara’s February 2012 criminal lawsuit against NXIVM for assisting and/or profiting from NXIVM criminal activity.
These Necker Island articles, the Times Union expose and Joseph O’Hara’s lawsuit against NXIVM all happened in February 2012. Kristin Kreuk was still coaching in Albany in 2012, even while filming a television show in Toronto and she stayed with the cult for over a year later. She only left the cult after breaking up with Mark Hildreth and moving to Toronto, not for moral ethical reasons. Her weak denial that she “never experienced any illegal or nefarious activity” in NXIVM is very suspicious.

Given Raniere’s predilection for underage girls, and the circumstantial evidence that they were engaging in child sex trafficking, I’m sure it would have been pretty easy for them to load a bunch of child porn onto a computer, and then plant it, prior to the raid. If the computer’s still in evidence, Mr. Tighe should ask his lawyers to hire a forensic computer analyst to examine the metadata on the photographs – the EXIF data may show that the pictures were taken at a NXIVM-controlled property.
Tighe did not have enough money to hire an attorney to go to trial. So I don’t know if he would be able to afford what you are suggesting.
But Keith Raniere and Allison Mack have Clare ‘Moneybags’ Bronfman as a friend and thus get a small army of defense attorneys.
After reading about this case all I can say is that America has the best system of justice that money can buy.

I just checked Wayback and tried to maneuver around John’s blog posts of early May and April 2012 when he discusses the battle with SEIU. Although I could expand those too months and see the titles of the blog posts for those two months, the way back machine did not capture any of these individual posts covering John’s battle with the insurance carrier.
So the part of the story that he lost his insurance is a lie. There was an error and the insurance was apparently restored. When will the lies stop?

John Tighe frequently targeted many innocent people who were only trying to better themselves and called them names and harassed them on his site and in real life. I won’t herald him as a hero in that respect but I do acknowledge the preservence. And knowing the computer expertise going on at nxivm, they certainly had the capability to do what is speculated.
