NY Times produces video on how they chose Raniere cover in Sunday magazine

A one minute video – Behind the Cover discusses how the New York Times Magazine editors chose the cover picture for their Sunday Magazine story about NXIVM and its leader, Keith Raniere.

This cover was chosen.

Jake Silverstein, editor in chief, said: “The red wash on Stefan Ruiz’s portrait of Keith Raniere instantly clues a reader in to the milieu of the story — we’re in the territory of the lurid, strange and possibly criminal. Placing him behind a wall of words casts him as a kind of Oz-like figure, leading Nxivm from behind a curtain.”

They almost picked this for their cover.

Keith posed for these pictures in the Monterrey Mexico area on condition that the location was not disclosed.  Here are four pictures that emerged of your Vanguard, suitable for framing and worshiping.

From the NY Times story: “Raniere presented himself as a great philosopher, an ethical man and a scientist pushing the bounds of human capability.”
“Members believed that Raniere could heal them of emotional traumas, set them free from their fears and attachments, clear patterns of destructive thinking. Some believed he could heal them sexually too. “
“He also seemed to have a unique, pulsating idea that resonated with women, particularly wealthy ones. “

\

“Raniere was called ‘Vanguard’ because he was the leader of their philosophical movement.”

  • Does he have Bell’s Palsy on the left side? Kind of drooping down in most phots.

  • The whole photo and article was horrifying. Keith Raniere is a horrifying man: “A black hole of Anti-Charisma.”

  • VanGrifter still looks like a Pumpkin head.

No doubt Scarecrow (Clare) paid for his custom-tailored $2000 suit and $300 shirts.

What a fucking waste. She could have done so much good for the world with her wealth – eradicate polio, leprosy, yellow fever.

But instead, she gave all her wealth to a Madman who promised her happiness… but instead devoured lives and souls.

The Buddhists speak of hungry ghosts walking the Earth – consuming but never full. Keith Raniere was a demon, devouring humans, shattering their dreams.

    • I really like the former nexian’s comment.
But Clare might have to some good for the world and herself (mostly herself) with that yellow fever cure if she skips to Fiji.

  • Looking at those photos of Raniere dressed casually all I can think of is that old phrase “The Banality of Evil.”

Don’t expect the Devil to come to you sporting horns and a tail.

  • The photos seemed designed to make him appear civilized and sophisticated. I think that the cover editors correctly bloodied up the splash page. The could have just had a brand appear on the front page, but I wonder if they promised to use pictures taken on site. Still, the could have asked to photograph brands on-site.

  • So, you CAN dress up a pig. I guess they made him shower for this. The first one is extra-creepy – guess that’s why it wasn’t selected.

    • Those slimy lips, his unhealthy pallor, and Keith Raniere’s monstrously asymmetrical face straight on.

    • Yuk, Keith, Allison, Clare, prison ain’t so bad. It is the chance to see where we are, a microscopic view of America. It has been subtle through the generations. With greed, capitalism and a pioneer spirit that is ingrained in every U. S. child, we have created a disrespect for life and our fellowman, (to be politically correct or not) our fellow human beings. Tipping cows, raping sheep, chickens are stupid, just your average American disrespect for life. Women and children are the collateral damage. Rape, pillage and burn in the name of whatever we believe. Upon generations we have built a disregard for our fellow human being and respect for life. We have selected what history is told, punished anyone that disagrees and even protect those that enforce this ideal. We are superior to North Korea, Isis, or any other country or entity that challenges the “pursuit of happiness”. NXIVM gave hope to a new dream. Had Keith not strayed from some basic principles, he would have succeeded in his endeavor to change the world. He had a good thing. The basic of what he did helped and motivated thousands. Some of his failures are derived from his lack of knowledge and/or his lack of respect for life. I don’t know his history, I cannot speak for Keith, but he either lost focus due to his weaknesses or shared a gift that he himself didn’t understand. I am not “integrated”, I am not “successful”, I am just an American that loves to work, loves my family and wants the American dream. Kosher has been perverted, Organic has lost the the premise of the goal, non-gmo is so backwards only a scientist can figure out what to eat. And my dream is that I can eat a meal without the “fear” of contamination, greed and disrespect. Allison, I do not know you, but I am trying to understand . When you chose not to eat, I ask why? Food is very basic when it is not perverted.

    • THE PERVERSION OF FOOD – Yuk – OCD, Keith, Allison, Clare, prison ain’t so bad. It is the chance to see where we are, a microscopic view of America. It has been subtle through the generations. • Trying to understand your message – I do, when it comes to the hypocrisy of the human race. I get it. In a way, it’s a totally different topic. I do understand that NXIVM gave hope to many people (fraudulently). The tragedy is that the promise was false. Keith Raniere never cared about anyone, ever. Except maybe Toni Natalie, whose departure seemed to trigger his uncontrollable rage, giving a glimpse of his true self. He was absorbed with pleasing himself, through whatever means. I must ask once again, who, with good intentions for mankind, would embark on such a campaign of terror and prosecution? Because he was rejected?

        • OCD – “So, you CAN dress up a pig”. OCD, Please read my comment again. For you to make a comment about pigs, you may not see the “cause and effect” or whatever lingo of how you are perpetuating the direction of what my point was.. Yes, Keith helped a lot of people, they may not have known beyond the surface, I was unaware of whatever was going on in NY, but the intro, basics of what he had ( NXIVM) helped me. Been to NY, met Keith, am not wealthy, not a prime target. Don’t throw out the Baby with the bath water. Look at how we have been trained to disrespect anything good. Your comment about pigs sparked a nerve because that is the root of the problem. If you can disrespect a pig, compare Keith to a pig, have no respect for a pig, brand a human, what is the cause. That was my point, if you don’t get it, that is my point. BTW not a different topic, just me looking at me and NXiIVM. THANK YOU Frank for a place to say what I think and feel.

          • OK. Many thanks for your clarification. I did not mean any disrespect to your position. I am happy you are sharing your thoughts. That is what this site is all about. But with respect I am still unconvinced that KR ever had good intentions. But maybe I am wrong! Many people have said they were helped by MXIVM, and I believe that. BTW I am an animal lover and do not hate pigs. Nor do I eat them, in any form.

          • I do not think keith intended to help others that was just a result of his experiments to prove his own power of covenance and sugestion that was the real name of the game what to help is just a facade that could work used wisely but the end of the day his real motivation was to see how far he could get in manipulating others to find their own interests just think that I use keith to get that woman who threw her head against a tree or drank water from a puddle think was not the guarantee is something more powerful, it is the blind trust that people put in the envelope that their intentions were always noble even though they did not understand the ideas they doubted more of themselves than of keith

          • There never were any good intentions behind Raniere or Salzman. Whether it was more about greed or power for either one of them is up for debate. My opinion being Salzman leaning more towards the $ and Raniere toward the power, but who can say for sure…
